My RAID controller cards are on their way out. One died and the other scares me. The manufacturer is no longer in business so support is non-existent. I'm looking for a new PCI Express card with about 8 drives supported. I'm looking at Supermicro's AOC-SASLP-MV8 as it's almost exactly what I want. I don't need hardware raid (plan is to use software), have some SFF8087 SAS to 4 port SATA cables (which work great),and my MOBO has up to 3 PCI-E x16 slots that are open. Currently running Win Server 2008, but I'm considering Linux. Any suggestions for cheap/compatible cards?

I think it's a matter of this use trying to mess with somebody elses computer under the geiss of it being his own.

If you've updated your firmware and/or want to play games online this hack will not work.

Not sure if it applies to low voltage caps, but high voltage ones cans build a charge over time if they are not shorted or hooked up to anything. Electronics Goldmine, Digikey (cheap, but difficult to find stuff), Sparkfun, Jameco (a bit pricier), MCM, Google. If you are really interested in components, see if you can find a Nuts and Volts magazine and just flip through all the advertisements. Also... check and see if you have any electronic surplus stores in your area. Some of the best deals come from them. They tend to be more interested in moving quantity rather than making good profits on small parts. Anyone ever been to an Axeman store in Minnesota? Pricier of the surplus stores, but an absolute must for any modder/hacker/etc

I've been wondering how well those work. Do the get a lot of noise? Do they drop out or overheat when at full power? I have a 500mW one, and I love it. Works wonders in BT4. They do use 2 USB ports... one for data/power, the other for additional power. Using just one limits the power, but it still works.

10minute shopping spree would be standing there, bug-eyed for 5 minutes. Then the rest of the time struggling to breath as everyone else calls for an EMT.

I do have the spare drives, just not the old style laptop IDE cable. I also have some drive to USB adapters. I've used them to get data off a drive and on to a computer, but here I'm looking to use it in reverse... a drive emulator. I probably can't do it, but I figured it was worth asking. The thumbdrive idea may work. I just don't know if the system will boot off of one. In the end, I'll get the cable I need, but I would think that if someone found a way to do drive emulation using a cheap adapter, it'd be nice. Thank you both. I'll keep looking, but I don't have too high of hopes for this crazy idea.

Yeah. I figured that, but I'm a cheap SOB and would rather not shell out the $4 for the cable I need :) That- and it'd be handy to have a way to do it.

So you have two systems. One is up and running, the other needs a drive. Connect the IDE adapter directly to the second. systems motherboard. Connect the USB part of the adapter to the working system. Create a virtual drive in the working system and share it out over the adapter. Like I said... probably not possible, but would be handy.

Hi all... I've been trying to find a laptop IDE to the same ribbon cable. I just had the thought that if you could use a cheap IDE/USB adapter in reverse of the norm I could get by for now. Basically I'm wondering if there is a way to use a USB/IDE adapter to share a disk image so you can connect the IDE adapter part to another motherboard. Probably not, but this would be very handy. If you think it would be possible and know what I should search for, please share. 10x points if you can provide a link to a yes/no it is possible and here's why. 50x for software link. 100x for windows software that can do it. Thankies. ::edit:: It's still early here so my brain is functioning at a quarter capacity. I currently have an IQ of 10. :P

Thanks. This guide worked great! The only thing I'd like to throw out there is that Win7 shares the internet connection and changes the IP of the adapter it shares it to. I was confused by that... I would share it and it would change it to 192.168.137.1. I tried then setting the IP on that adapter once I noticed it, but this seemed to break the share. Has anyone else had this? I finally set the Fon to the 137.x subnet and it worked... Is so strange!

I ordered one of these a little over a year ago. It was a nice little device to have to set up a quick NAS and what-not. Well, I just found out that there is a "firmware upgrade" that puts a new OS on there. See here. I was dinking around with it and found it much to my liking. I went back to my box of small network devices to see what else I could void the warranty on. In there I found a classic Fon router. Much to my amazement I was using the same power brick model (albeit modified for the NAS box) on both the Fon and my wlxkj652. I got to thinking. Both require +- the same power. Both are hackable. The wlxkj652 seems to have a lot more processing power than I would ever need in a small NAS. There's gotta be a way to use them both together in some way. A wifi bitorrent server for any wifi hotspot? Ya know... I bet someone at the Hak.5 forums would have a nifty idea. It seems DealExtreame still sells this unit, but they are a new model that doesn't take to the SNAKE OS, but I'm sure you guys could find a way to turn these things into something useful. A nice, cheap, potentially portable project... maybe. I figured I'd share and see if anyone cares. Note: My experience with shipping from DX is that it takes at least a month to the US. Shipping cost is $0.01 USD, however. But other than that and the lack of manufacturer info, the communities that pop-up on there are very helpful and just about anything will ship without any questions asked (except laser pointers with >5mW to the US (Banned by the FDA, i guess)).

You would probably have to build the thing into the keyboard itself or use another device to take signals from the computer and input them into the teensy... No really easy way at the moment and probably way more work than anything useful in a prank.
