  1. That's called Ebay Auctioning my friend, there are other users also wanting to buy the same product as you. The best way to confront that, is wait for the last minute and then place your bid.

Or look for another managed switch that is not being auctioned.

That's why I'm asking about the one above since it's buy it now.

  2. I have ssh access to my desktop in my home lan by forwarding the port using the router. On this computer I have drupal running in a virtual machine with its own IP address, I was wondering if there was anyway I could use ssh port forwarding to route traffic to the VM from the remote machine through my desktop without forwarding port 80 on my router.

  3. if you want to use a rackmount server look into the poweredge 2650's. they are 2u in size and most of the ones i looked at on ebay come with 2x xeon cpu's and most have 2gb-4gb ram for under $100 shipped. scout around enough you can find one loaded with drives essentially ready to run for a reasonable price.

throw whatever OS you want on it and your good to go. the 2650's have dual gigabit nic's and all of the ones i looked at have 2 psu's.

    Sweet

Edit: The 1750s look really good too from the same store.

  4. You can also use flash memory its much cheaper than mirrored disks http://www.transcendusa.com/products/ModDetail.asp?ModNo=26 if uptime is important and its cheaper than a hardisk. You need at least 2 network cards the most cheap 1u servers on ebay don't got it. There are also motherboards made for firewals and there are nice cases for it on http://m0n0.ch/wall/hardware.php you can find more information . What also could do the trick and is a lot cheaper is a router with costum firmware like dd-wrt or openwrt you can set up routing and it works with vlans and got lots of more functions but it don't have firewall rules en IDS / IPS functionality like a firewall distro.

As firewall distro i got a great experience with pFsense and at home i have a router with dd-wrt that works great and is performing very well.

I would use a linksys with dd-wrt but I would like something a little beefier which can be rackmounted for organization I may just build one but I'm having problems finding a reasonably priced case.

  5. if you watch episode 718 Darren talks about building your own router. I don't think your going to want to get a 1u server, while it will work, the size is a little big at least in width and depth. what you could do is if you have an old computer you could use that, or you could build your own. I would suggest for the sake of minimizing as many bottle necks in the system as possible using gigabit cards. watch the episode and you will get a better idea. But my only suggestion really is gigabit cards and some form of a computer based router. If the 1u servers have gigabit and thats what seems cheapest go with it, but if they don't I would say look around. But watch the episode and then look around. haha

Thanks, I've seen the episode and really enjoyed it. The reason I'm looking for something 1u is so I can begin rackmounting my equipment since I'm building a 4u file server and my roomies are doing some stuff they want racked too.

  6. I'm about to move into a new house and get a fiber internet connection for me and my 3 roomies with 100 Mb up and down and we want a more professional router setup. I was wondering what you guys thought of installing a linux router distro off of one of those 1u ebay servers you can get for about 50 bucks. Anyone had any experience with these or better ideas?

  7. Or... you can use shielded wire to speakers in every room all run back to an amplifier. And give the amplifier whatever source you want.

What if I wanted different rooms playing different things though? I know it's kind of silly but I think it would be cool if my room mates could go to a web server and select music to play in there rooms or play the same thing in every room.

  8. My parents are buying a new house and we're going to wire it with Cat 5e and junk. I want a way to control speakers in every room in the house from a central server. Would you advise using the Ethernet to transfer this data then convert it to sound using something in every room or would you advise wiring audio cables into the rooms with jacks in the wall and have a whole bunch of sound cards on a server?

  9. I'm moving out of my dorm room this summer and into an apartment and want to upgrade my current monitor situation(1xHanns-G 23.6"). I want two monitors in the 24ish range preferably with same make and thin bezel since I'm using them side by side. Any ideas? I looked at the Dell Ultrasharp 24" and was wondering if you guys considered them worth the money for internet, code and media usage.

  10. I want to start developing an application to keep track of all the comic books I own and want. I want to make a database to keep track of all the information but was wondering what language I should use. I'm not new to programming but I'm pretty new to databases so any help would be appreciated. The software has to work in linux since my desktop uses ubuntu.

  11. The only issue I see with this set up is, that if someone is watching a video and another person on the other end starts torrenting files, that could have an impact on the video playback.

What if I got 2 NICS and used one for computer traffic and the other for HTPC and console video streaming. Or I could even try to do load balancing for double the throughput.

  12. I'm about to move into an apartment and I'm setting up a home network. I'm going to build a rackmount and set up a NAS on it but was wondering if I buy some 1U servers for some other things if they can use the NAS as storage for lots of tasks(not boot). Mainly I'm wondering about running a UPNP server for distributing media but storing the media on the NAS.

  13. haha lol

I recommend http://customise.org/ you'll see some great displays of wallpapers and add-ons that people are using.

Rainmeter is quite popular but is that windows only? There was a post in forums about setting up linux from scratch and that has some nice add-ons in it Perfect Ubuntu set up

Personally I run a conky for my linux lappie and a G15 with the addons I want for my desktop, although the G15 app switching is annoying at times I thought there was some sort of priority event system so apps come to the front but it never works

    thanks

  14. So I'm redesigning my desktop on all 3 of my machines(macbook pro, linux desktop and linux laptop). I'm looking for some cool backgrounds to start with and then I'm going to integrate conky and geektool(mac) into the interface. I'm looking for an attractive way to display sysinfo, date, time, and other interesting things(maybe quote of the day).

I'm a compsci/ math major in college so I love computers and technology and linux.

I also like comics, bikes and juggling. I also really like abstract backgrounds in stuff.

    Please post ideas!
