I agree, especially with Backtrack/Knoppix STD/whatever else available. It's actually fairly easy to make a simple distro using a tool called "Remastersys" -- but it does take a good amount of time to get everything installed and working the way you want it to even with a tool to do some of the work for you.

I don't know if this happens to anyone else, and I only have about a year's worth of job experience as an IT intern so maybe I shouldn't be talking, but some people make me wonder how they got their job at all... Here's mine: "What is this Linux thing you're talking about? Is it expensive?" followed by "What's a Linux distribution?" -Senior level network/hardware guy, who works in the server room all day with Solaris machines, who claims to have a Master's in Computer Science and routinely spouts off about how smart he is...right.

You gotta read the box and check the minimum power supply requirement before you buy the video card. Sounds like your power supply wasn't powerful enough to handle the card. Personally I've always gone with ATI and have never had a problem. On the other hand, the one time I tried a nVidia card, it was a lemon and put scanlines through my screen. I'll stick with ATI. :P
