  1. I setup a file server last year that I also needed to share with friends, family, etc. What I used was Adito OpenVPN-als the Lars Werner project. I set it up with IP restrictions and it worked beautifully.
  2. For anyone interested I did find this when I first started looking into the issue, but I don't really want to buy a program http://www.manageengine.com/products/ad-manager/active-directory-management.html?CampaignID=50401&kw=active%2520directory%2520management&adId=6344904612&gclid=CLOPt_aKzrUCFYZcMgodf38A8Q
  3. That's what I was afraid of. I'm sure I can find something or put something together, my concern is being it windows based, the program/software crashes and does not work for a session once it crashes. Steady State for example I used that before and I like the features it has, but it wasn't the most reliable. Guess I will just have to get a copy of Pro or Enterprise. Thanks for the info in win8 I haven't done a lot of research other then trying to find GP. I wasn't a big fan until I saw it does have a desktop environment.
  4. I'm not sure, is that what Windows RT is? I just heard about RT the other day and from what I saw it looked to be the tablet version of windows 8. This is probably RT I suppose, because I don't see any way to join a domain or anything. I have already setup family safety and I must say it is nice and has improved quite a bit from the last time I've messed with it, but it does display annoying notifications even when the filtered user isn't attempting to use the blocked app/game, etc. The family safety works to a certain extent. Mainly safe surfing and blocked apps, I don't see anyway to block cmd.exe, control panel, etc. Those are my big concerns now. Thanks for the response.
  5. So I finally bought my 8 year old a laptop today which had windows 8. Was tempted to wipe it and install win7 as I don't have a copy of 8 yet. My problem is I want to lock it down and restrict access. It's my first time really using windows 8 and the first thing I looked for was Group Policy. After a bit of googling I can't find anything on this machine relating to GP, secpol, gpedit, none of that. Apparently this is the "stripped down" version of windows 8. When I run winver or in computer properties all I see is windows 8, not Basic, Home or Starter. Is there a way I can get GP on this machine? The family safety features are nice, but with annoying notification pop ups. The laptop is a HP Pavilion G4 if that helps any.
  6. Gotcha! Makes sense. Thanks a lot man! I been so busy I haven't had time to mess with this again, but I will do so tomorrow and report back success. Now the only thing is, if you faded in the second image I would think that the first image (bob ernyart) would fade in along with the second image, but in your clip it doesn't appear that way. Thanks a bunch!
  7. Having a bit of an issue with something that seems so simple. The second image of both did you do say just open paint and paste the 2 images together and save that file? If so, I'm not sure or I guess I can't figure out how to fade that second half of the image.
  8. @ airman_dopey Your right, I never even noticed that. Wow... Okay I got you, now I'll play around with it. I get what your saying and I think I know how to do this in windows movie maker. Going to give it a shot and see if I can make it happen. Thanks!
  9. I thought about the whole 2 image deal, but if I do that on the second image it will re-fade in the first image along with the second image whereas I just need the second image to fade in alone after the first. @ Infiltrator, you don't think this can be done using Windows Movie Maker, or Camtasia?
  10. Hey guys, one of my boss' from a previous job is wanting to make a youtube video equivalent to this one My issue is, the part where Bob Ernyart's image is displayed, a few seconds later and image of Johnny Bravo fades in. That's what I can't figure out and am not exactly sure what to google for as far as that goes. All I have work with currently is Windows Movie Maker and Camtasia. Can that be done with either of those two progams? Thanks!
  11. I found the same information. That the unifying software was only to pair new devices. I have found nothing that lists driver's for this receiver. Everything I have found points back to the unifying software. To answer your questions above, 1.) Other Devices - USB Receiver 2.) USB\VID_046D&PID_C52B&REV_1201 USB\VID_046D&PID_C52B 3.) Laptop (Asus Model UL80Jt) 4.) Win7 Ultimate 64-bit 5.) Haven't tried it yet, but I'm betting it doesn't.
  12. Guys, I'm about to pull hair I don't even have out, literally! I just got this keyboard which came with no driver disc, I found the unifying software download and when it is run it never see's the receiver. Looking in device manager of course it says the driver's are not installed. I can't for the nothing find the actual driver files the .inf files, it appears that this unifying software is suppose to install them, but every usb port gives the same issue. I don't have another box here to test as I'm in the process of moving and I've searched for awhile for just the driver's , but nothing but this unifying software is returned in results. ANY advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
  13. I agree with Infiltrator, also does the router have latest firmware updates? Have you tried bypassing the router with one device connected straight to the modem? That is a pretty good consumer grade router that you have. You mentioned at least 2 different boxes, that being that case I'd say we can rule out it being a box issue, but still could be. Have you tried say using VLC to steam a video from one box to another? With an issue like this, me personally I like to know the exact cause and why. If you've not tried bypassing the router I'd try dmz'ing 1 box first and if problem still exist then bypass the router just as a test. Always best to find where the source of the problem is occurring then troubleshoot from there. Not sure about everything you've tried, but me what I would have done if having a problem streaming online was... 1. Any other device on the network capable of streaming to see if problem still exist 2. If problem still exist, try putting any 1 device in DMZ 3. If problem still exist, reset router to factory 4. If problem still exist, test directly from modem 5. If problem still exist, try one other device from modem is possible 6. if problem still exist, it's obvious it is either and issue with your modem/gateway or ISP The way I operate in situations like that is POE, Process of elimination. I like to find where things are good and bad and then break it down to see what's causing the bad.
  14. What model of d-link are you using? Also when streaming I assume you are wireless on the pc's your trying to stream from? I'd be curious to know the results of a packet loss test as well as visit youtube and play any video and then then run a packet loss test at the same time or a speed test and packet loss test at the same time.
  15. I've used plex and mixing it up with a google tv or media device is not a bad idea. Hmmm I like that. Hmmm... well one of the server's I believe it was the poweredge 650 had a raid controller card installed that did not fill the PCI-X bus completely if that makes sense. I did a bit of research and even asked a guy at a fry's electronic's if a 32-bit PCI card would work in that bus and he said yea. I also have heard PCI-X is PCIe, but the bus is longer and I've not yet seen any PCI-X HDMI video card. I need to find a recent A+ course that cover's all that so I can be up to date.
  16. Guys, I'm looking to turn a rackmount server into my media server, but wanted to get some input. I have quite a few poweredge server's, but am looking to get a more beefier server. My biggest and only issue so far is finding one 2U or bigger that I can get a working HDMI video card to pass audio and HD video. Most of the server's I have mostly have PCI-X buses which to my understanding are backwards compatible with standard 32-bit PCI. I did manage to find a PCI video card with HDMI, but it did not work. I will admit I am a bit behind on my hardware, when I read the A+ book it was 2004 so I never even remember nor messed with PCI-X until I got these server's. I'm looking to use either a PowerEdge or HP Proliant. If anyone has any suggestions. Thanks.
  17. I thought about modding my old surfboard, but I thought only the 5100 and 5101 were supported as far as jtagging? Given your response about regarding the firmware is why I stay away from motorola ;) All modems receive firmware updates, but motorola's are by far the worst as far as operational, at least in this area.
  18. How the hell are you getting a better upload over a VPN? LOL. I'm not a big fan of any motorola cable modem, personally Arris, the Linksys and uBee D3's are much better and are less likely to become intermittent once their levels are a bit out of range.
  19. If I were you I'd change that out. I know just about every cable modem available and all about them. Motorola and RCA are by far the worst. Generally if your modem is generating heat then your upstream is a bit high. Check http://192.168.100.1 and look at your downstream and upstream power levels. I will guess that your upstream level is about a 52?
  20. A friend of mine just messaged me telling me that her son (11) has been trying to look at adult content on her iphone. If possible I would also like suggestions on blocking adult content for that as well. I'm sure there is probably apps out there and all, I haven't looked yet. I just figured I would mention that being at some point I will be looking to do the same when I get my child a cell phone.
  21. @cscash241 I plan on blocking her ability to change any of those settings as well as blocking control panel.
  22. I think I may play with squid, as much as I've heard about and as beneficial as it may be. Would it play nice for what I'm wanting in a VM or would a dedicated box be better? I've used K9 before also. If I remember right it was free and it did do a pretty good job. I forgot about that though so thanks for the reminder, it may come in handy.
  23. Thanks alot guys. I think I will go with OpenDNS per her machine, because that does work well. Now I've heard about squid and thought about playing with it so that will be something new to me and useful. I'm not too concerned with anyone using a liveCD to boot off of, I can just disable that in the bios. My main concerns were safety and security. I really like what digip has done, that seems pretty useful for child use. Now another thing I thought about is, what if I were to setup the laptop to where it would need to be logged onto the domain via a vpn in order to access the internet so all the traffic was routed through the domain or some proxy behind it? She would just have a simple shortcut on the desktop to connect to that once she has connected to the internet via wireless or wired. Would that be overkill? A @ digip What are you using to monitor the machine with? I don't really want to put no keylogger or nothing that will report as a trojan/backdoor. I want to keep it as clean as possible while also providing privacy. I'm hoping to find something that is "friendly" on the eyes and a nice gui would be sweet. I don't care to much for looking through numerous txt file's. I tried that Microsoft Family Safety and didn't like it too well. I wonder if it's changed any, I might throw it in a VM and play with it again. This is a challenge and a learning process I think for us parents, because alot of stuff we learn via trial an error they are now teaching in high school.
  24. Hey guys, I'm in the process of getting an 8 year old a laptop and I want to make sure it's being used securely and safely. I play with group policy a little bit and I'm learning. I'm curious though, how would one of you guys secure a machine for a child to prevent installation of software, block adult content sites, etc? I've played with SteadyState and it's nice, but a bit buggy. It became more of a hassle then a admin tool. What I'm thinking is setting up a domain and joining that laptop to the domain with applied domain policy and to block things such as cmd.exe and control panel. I pretty much want to only allow internet access, but safe. As I'm typing that I just remembered OpenDNS is pretty good as far as the safe browsing. Another thing is, if I join it to the domain and create a policy, say away from home at school or at a friends house she uses the laptop or someone else even and the user tried to do something that required admin privileges or malicious, when logging back onto the laptop and onto the domain does it somehow "sync" reports of usage? I haven't gotten that far yet in this trainsignal course I'm doing. That's one thing that confuses me about company issued laptops how they can log onto the computer when away from the domain controller and with no internet connection.
