  1. I'm familiar with raid, but never have set one up. I have this raid array now at home with 13x300GB SCSI disks, but it's old. The connection is LVD and I've never messed with any of that. I would like to be able to use these disks. For my personal raid I am thinking of grabbing a couple 6TB or 8TB drives and doing a raid 1 or raid 5. I'll look into raid 6. Or possibly a drobo.
  2. Yes Cooper, That is in the plans for 2015. I'm usually always pretty backed up. I'm looking to do a RAID solution in a new build. What would you suggest as far as a mirrored raid or a raid 5 I think?
  3. Thanks for the quick and prompt replies guys. I was actually able to recover my data. After running a few software's wondering why I couldn't access the data it recovered it dawned on me (oh yea it's an encrypted disk) Using an EZ-Dock I was able to mount the disk "without pre-boot authentication" and then I was able to open my computer, access the drive and grab the data. I have since switched to Bitlocker.
  4. No I did not pay a company. I'm trying to recover the data myself. I have installed EaseUS Data Recovery and a few others to recover the data. EaseUS has found most of the data compared to the other software's I've tried. However a video file for example won't play and I think it might be due to the fact I encrypted the entire disk with truecrypt. I guess right now I'm trying to decrypt the disk with truecrypt then attempt to recover the data, but when I try to decrypt the data with truecrypt it always returns wrong password or not a truecrypt volume.
  5. Okay guys, I'm close to pulling my hair out now lol. Recently I had a drive fail on my which was entirely encrypted via truecrypt, as soon as I noticed it started to fail I went and bought a new drive and got things up and running again. I've tried a few vendor's to recover the data and have had best success with EaseUS Data Recovery. It finds quite a bit of data, but in raw format I guess. It just now tonight dawned on me that I'm betting because I encrypted the entire disk with truecrypt is why I cannot read/play any of the files. So I installed truecrypt regular installation in hopes to decrypt the disk, but when I Select Device, Volume Tools, Permanently Decrypt I goto enter the password and it always returns invalid password or not a truecrypt volume. I have tried a few other software to scan the disk for files, but nothing has found as much data as EaseUS. Is there something better? The weird thing is, this drive isn't doing the "click of death", but when recovery software is scanning the disk occasionally it will "click". It shows the 100MB system partition in my computer and the 465GB partition and when you try to explore either it says it needs to be formatted. I'm using an EZ Dock USB to read the disk to backup data. Hoping there is a solution to retrieve the data. Thanks in advance!
  6. Hmmm, Thanks Cooper. I wonder why they would build a laptop with 2 video cards though? I've heard about sLi and all that, but I am not really knowledgeable about it nor am I a gamer. I believe I used DriverBackup to backup the driver's then I wiped the laptop and just restored the driver's that way. I didn't even think to look in the bios and I am curious for what reason would a laptop need to shut down this video card or switch between the 2? Thanks for the info.
  7. Thanks for the quick and prompt reply Cooper. I disabled the device I guess via device manager. I tried disabling both and uninstalling both. I don't understand why it see's 2 different video cards being it's a laptop completely stock. All I did was a wipe and re-install. Just tried again this time disabling the intel HD graphics driver and uninstalling it and then updated SP1 and it did the same thing. Reboot then configure the SP then reboot and reboot again asking to boot normal mode or launch startup repair.
  8. Ok guys I'm at my wits end on this! I've googled and googled and can't find anyone having the same issue as me. I have an ASUS laptop model UL80J and recently wiped and re-installed win7 pro 64-bit. My issue is it finds 2 different video cards or dirver's. One is Intel HD Graphics Driver and the other is NVIDIA GeForce 310m I believe. I don't know why it does it never did this before. What happens is everytime I reboot it starts to boot, then reboots and asks to launch startup repair or normally. The only way I can then get it to boot back is if I launch startup repair and let it do it's magic and it finally boots back. I've known this whole time it was an issue due to the video card, but cannot find a fix for nothing. I finally tried disabling each video card one at a time and rebooting and if I disabled the NVIDIA card it boots fine until I went to install service pack 1. It does the same thing the launching startup repair I guess removes SP1 and it boots back up. So now because I haven't read a post that someone is having the same issue as me I'm overly frustrated with this. I thought about installing win8, but I really don't want to do that. Any tips, pointers or advice is greatly appreciated. This laptop is for the car mainly for the kids to watch their movies, etc. so I'm not afraid to try anything on it. Thanks in advance.
  9. Thanks for all the info guys. I got PPTP up and working just like I want and I just got IPSec working on my iphone, but I'm confused a bit. I can connect just fine and have internet access though when I goto ipchicken it shows the wan ip of my iphone using IPSec. When I do using PPTP it shows my home WAN address. I would like to if possible be able to access all machines on my home network using IPSec and route all my traffic through that as well. I just searched on tunneling my traffic over IPSec and it is directing me to configure settings in the "outbound" section of the firewall. The scenario is between 2 office buildings. I guess I'm a little confused on how my traffic is being routed securely if it doesn't appear to be tunneled being that it is showing my WAN address of my iphone vs my home WAN address.
  10. After not having my machines for about a year and a half I come to find out when I go to attempt to install anything I cannot do so with any account except the built in Admin account. I had my UAC turned off completely. After quite a bit of research I found the best possible solution is to create a new profile. Me not wanting to re-organize my files, and re-install programs I finally found this link here: http://insectophobia.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/error-writing-temporary-file-make-sure-your-temp-folder-is-valid I turned UAC back on and was able to use my account normally. My issue is, you would think there would be a way to write to the registry or something to avoid having to create a new profile all over. I figured I would share this, because it seemed pretty interesting and useful.
  11. I was thinking of something along those lines for iOS devices. Now from a security and reliability standpoint I'm wondering if IPSec, L2TP or OpenVPN would be best to use for daily use.
  12. Thanks for the quick reply guys. 5 minutes after I posted this topic I got it working. The whole time I've been looking through the firewall options I never noticed there was a separate PPTP VPN tab at the top. I selected the PPTP VPN interface and allowed ipv4 and 6 and TCP/UDP and it worked after that. I have OpenVPN working as well, but not remotely. I need a solution that will work with PC/MAC and iDevices and Droids. I'm having a problem with OpenVPN config on my iphone. I know I need to edit it somehow, just not sure how I'm gonna do it and get it back to the iphone the way the app is. I will also setup IPSecVPN. I want to get real familiar with all VPN technologies.
  13. Guys I am a bit stumped. It's been a lil over a year and a half so I am very rusty, but I finally got my lab/rack environment set back up and I just installed the latest version of PFSense. I have got OpenVPN working, but my iphone has a problem connecting. I'll figure that out. My issue is I have also enabled pfsense to serve as a pptp vpn. Problem is I can connect just fine, but I have no internet access when connected. I want to tunnel my traffic over the vpn. I've down about a days worth of googling and seen all the posts about creating NAT or firewall rules, but none that really mention how to create the rule to give connecting clients access to the local lan and internet. A link to a good post or any info is greatly appreciated. As far as config: PFSense is doing all the routing and running dhcp with a subnet of: 10.13.37.1/24 In the PPTP config I have the PPTP server set at 10.13.37.240 and the start address at 10.13.37.150 which is just outside of the address pool. DNS is set to googles DNS servers. Another weird thing I noticed is once I have configured the PPTP VPN I can no longer even view that section via Chrome. I can just fine in IE.
  14. I will look at the features offered in the free edition vs. the enterprise version and see which one will suit my needs best. Thanks.
  15. Yea I looked at owncloud too, but it's not free. I like the interface of tonido so far and BTSync seems to fit my needs also. I will throw them in a VM and see which one will work best for me. Thanks guys!
  16. Thanks for the quick reply :) I just checked and that also does seem like it will work for my needs. I guess now I'm curious does BTSync or any other home cloud services support multiple user login options? Before I was using adito which worked well, but there was no option to "sync" which will be very convenient for family.
  17. Hey guys, I am wanting to run my own cloud server something kinda equivalent to Drop Box, but from home. After googling a bit it seems this is the way to go: http://www.tonido.com/ I'm just curious if there is anything better that I might not have seen.

    SSL-VPN

So I'm surprised there isn't anything out there like Adito from my googling and posting here. I have a couple questions though. I am a bit rusty as it's been awhile given my current situation, but I have Adito running on a 2k8R2 box and it would not run on port 443. The box is basically fresh install with very minimal other software installed. I'm trying to figure out why it will not run on port 443, well the service fails to start if I try to use that port. I've checked netstat -aon and the PID came back as 4 and looking in task manager it shows System using PID 4 so I'm confused as to figure out what is using port 443? It shows listening in netstat, but no idea what's listening?
  19. Dec100, Thanks for that buddy! I was not aware such a service existed. I am a bit rusty on my reconnaissance skills ;)

    SSL-VPN

Yea I use OpenVPN via Untangle which works great! I'm more looking for something more equivalent to Adito. Basically a site running on the server at home that I can point the user's to said address and they can log in and have a listing or what not of file's on the site.

    SSL-VPN

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I've asked here before if so sorry for the double post, but I'm wondering, is there any other alternative out there to the Adito Lars Werner project? I have been using it since I first heard about it on hak5, but it appears to be a dead project and support for it is minimal. I absolutely love the project it's came in use so many ways, I'm curious if there is something else out there that's up to date. I mainly use it for file transfer's and network resources. So if there is something similar that user's can sign in via https and upload/download (mostly family pictures) files that will work also. I remembered I googled for other ssl-vpn solutions along time ago, but didn't find much unless it was for a business and I wanted to buy licensing.
  22. Thanks for the quick response guys! @ digip, yes she has changed all her passes and never used the same for everything and all her questions. I honestly think somehow that her address book was just compromised and the bot or user is mass spamming her address book. She said her clients are receiving the junk about 2 times a day. I also suggested she leave yahoo or use a different e-mail for her work and she has done so, now using the email service via her domain. She does use facebook on her phone and I'm sure yahoo as well and maybe other social apps. Also yes I did notice a localhost address in the header I was looking at and I thought that I would need the original e-mail, because of tracking purposes that it would show me her address if it were forwarded vs. the attacker's IP, but I wasn't sure. I use to use yahoo back in the day, but I find gmail is much better especially for business use if your not gonna buy a domain. Also it's been awhile since I been on the forums, I was wondering when hak5 was gonna add a like button :) bout time! Thanks again guys for all your input and advice:)
  23. Hey guys, I'm a bit rusty. I have a friend who's yahoo e-mail account I believe has been compromised. She has changed her passwords on all her accounts, from various devices in various locations and still somehow something/someone is using her yahoo e-mail account OR has managed to copy her address book and is spoofing her e-mail account sending out spam to all her clients. She has forwarded me 2 of the e-mails to my gmail account and I know to look in the header's, etc, but I'm having a bit of an issue trying to figure how where to look to see where the e-mail was originated from. Looking at the headers in gmail to me it mostly looks like a bunch of encrypted gibberish.
  24. Thanks guys. You've given me some ideas here. I wasn't exactly sure what to google for, but now I think I can find something. I work for the cable company as a service tech. The thing is we have symbol devices that everything is automatically logged via the companys application we use. We have to "status" ourselves basically when in route to a home, when we arrive, when we are on hold with our dispatch, lunch, etc. So all that is already logged, but we have no way to go back and reference our times. None of us like manually entering our times nor writing it down on paper trying to remember and save documents. I can set something up at home on a server for all of the guys to use if possible. I'm going to do some digging around with this later this evening. Thanks again.
  25. Hey guys, in the field I work we do our work time online via the company's intranet. We work 8-5 and for the longest we were allowed to enter our time 0800-1200/1300-1700. We have to use military time. That is a typical work day stating we were able to get a lunch and if we did we did we took it when we were able to. Now they want us to enter time worked minute for minute and the biggest thing is remembering "what time" we took our lunch if we get one. It's become a problem for most of us as we don't really care to have to write it down on paper and try to remember where that paper is, etc. My question is, is there an app or something you guys might suggest that say we can "check-in" that will timestamp, etc. I work in the service industry and have a symbol device similar to UPS and we have "statusing" so we status when we take our lunch, what were doing etc. Problem is there is no way to go back and see any history of our statusing. So I'm curious if there is a smartphone app or even something I could run on a pc to sync with my phone to "check in" if that makes sense. Something I can reference. I currently use notepad on my iphone or android device, but I gotta type date, time, etc. I'm trying to avoid doing all that. ANY advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
