  1. [Anyone having success with [GRUB2 1.96] booting directly from the .ISO ? Great results so far for only Ubuntu variants... 1. Ubuntu Jaunty, LinuxMint 7 work great with grub.cfg ; menuentry "Ubuntu Live 9.04 i386" { loopback loop /boot/iso/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/boot/iso/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso -- initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.gz 2. Backtrack (and others) Fail from the dreaded hang (Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs) endless loop... menuentry "BackTrack Pre 4" { loopback loop /boot/iso/bt4-pre-final.iso linux (loop)/boot/vmlinuz find_iso/filename=/boot/iso/bt4-pre-final.iso BOOT=casper boot=casper xforcevesa rw quiet -- initrd (loop)/boot/initrdfr.gz } This is becoming more trouble than it's worth... the teasing part is, Grub2 will be standard eventually, and it touts itself as being able to (cough cough) easily boot an .ISO image file (Live CD). Argggh
  2. I just tried Grub2 to make a bootable USB 16 Gig flash drive, without modifiying the .iso. So far it worked wonderfully with: ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso Live CD. Build Grub2: http://www.puredarwin.org/developers/booting/grub2 Installing/using Grub2 on to the USB, and configuring Grub2: http://www.panticz.de/MultiBootUSB I formatted the USB stick as Fat32, single primary partition, ran the Windows version of syslinux to get a good working MBR. Download syslinux from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/ # syslinux.exe -m -a g: Ciao.
  3. Viewer Feedback; Ideas for a follow up episode; Part II USB Stick Multiboot; 1. How in include large DVD images; i.e. 4681940992 debian-502-amd64-DVD-1.iso 2. How to use grub/grub4dos to chain to another logical partition for booting extracted .iso live CD/DVD 3. How to 'manually' prepare the USB in Windows & Linux i.e. MBR (Syslinux or other), Set active, File system choices ... just in case an automatic tool doesn't work (petousb failed on me, 'disk dismount failure', V3.0.0.8_GER (German Version) & 3.0.0.7) 4. Please mention if you are using tools in Windows which services need to run to allow the tool you are demonstrating to fully function. I've experienced this in a prior episode where system requirements for the tool are not completely mentioned, resulting in either a failure or incomplete results. 5. How to manually configure persistance for various Live CD/DVD boot distros to retain changes. Thank you very much for your fantastic episodes!
