  1. nvm, someone delete this please.
  2. Have you tried reinstalling without the key? Usually windows saves the key in a special sector on the hard drive. (At least, it does that for me with XP pro)
  3. squid http proxy using ssh to connect. All you need is a *nix box.
  4. Well, if you have more than one box just use freenas + esxi and you should be able to back up the data. Just use zfs and do disk snapshots.
  5. What is the point of using esxi at all if you are just running open solaris?
  6. The easiest way to access network PC storage volumes is mounting network storage at the root level. Something like \\home-desktop\C$. I'm really not sure why you want to setup this server. If you have no real goal or purpose it is utterly useless. If you are going to do anything at least setup a web server(always fun to experiment with).
  7. No real need to use netcat, you could simple just learn how to manage everything with SSH. I would suggest using a strict command line only debian box, but it may be easier for you to use xubuntu(ubuntu with XFCE DE). Honestly, you would just need to setup a samba share on the linux box, and then find a video encoder you like. The application repository is huge on debian and every program is only an aptitude away. It would be nice to see if it is even worth encoding on his machine. It may be so old that it could take hours to encode short segments of video. Linux is free to download, just have to supply your own CD or flash drive.

    FTP

No, don't use normal ftp unless you are just serving files to anonymous users.

    FTP

sftp! Just use ssh and tell it to chroot a nix group into a directory with sftp privs.

Why don't you just pay the gang who created conficker to do it for you?
  11. http://www.insidepro.com/eng/egb.shtml Definitely the best program I have used for bruteforcing. It does come at a $40 price tag though.
  12. It totally depends on your internet connection speed and the bitrates / compression ratios of the video being streamed.
  13. Would make it even more simple to make it: sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude upgrade
  14. Most antiviruses with real time protection and even on demand scanners, scan by file extension. Basically if you make it a random extension that the AV has no clue about, it will not scan for it. I believe this is to speed up time on the AV's part. If you do an on demand scan of the specific file(even with the extension changed), it will most likely remove it.
  15. why not just make something like fifox.com that just uses a frame or iframe to display the page, but it takes up the whole screen. Then use onkeydown javascript events to capture keystrokes and send them using httprequests to a php script on the server. You could also make it log them out in an invisible frame before the main one loads. You can really get creative. The hardest part would probably be the keypress event. Seems rather plausible with javascript though. EDIT: Although you can't do it through a frame or iframe, you can still get the file contents with php and embed them in the body of the page. Then you could have a script with the document.onkeypress handler that monitors the page for keystrokes.
  16. You obviously fail to read what I said
  17. The problem with this is that if the removeable drive was removed from the pc, it would not be able to boot. I suggest adding a grub partition to an internal drive instead.
  18. No, its a security feature built into vista. It will always prompt you to run the autorun or not, unless you click the checkbox. If you didn't notice, its right there on the menu.
  19. You guys realize yet that vnc is garbage if you have rdp?
  20. I would suggest instead of using the logmein client to use hamachi and rdp. This will only work if you have Win 2000, XP Pro, or Vista Business / Ultimate. This would probably be the ideal way as rdp is much more stable than any vnc based solution. Its as easy as checking the checkbox in the remote tab under system properties. All you need to do is install the hamachi client on both computers and make sure they are connected in the same "channel". Just use the IP adress hamachi gives the rdp computer and plug that into remote desktop(all versions of Windows should have it).
  21. If you are getting viruses from limewire then most likely you aren't doing something legal and it doesn't warrant a reason for virus protection. Even then, just by looking at the attributes of different files you can tell which ones are viruses.
  22. If you are going to go the linux route i definitely suggest using an nvidia gpu as they have much better drivers than ati. You probably won't need a top of the line gpu for tv output. You could probably get away with a 9600gt or something along those lines.
  23. The reason I use an antivirus is not protection for myself but for protection of the other people around me. Sure, I probably don't need an antivirus but what if one of my family members decides to do something dumb on my computer? What if they compromise the security of the network from their own machines? It doesn't matter how much you teach them, something is bound to happen. I would rather see a free antivirus like Avira take 8 megs of my 8 gigs of ram, to ensure I am protected from the mishaps of others. Most antiviruses can prevent most infections to date. They usually run into trouble when they are freshly installed on a virus riddled machine though.
  24. I couldn't agree less. Avast has one of the most cryptic interfaces i have ever seen and detection rates are poor. Avira may have that annoying popup once a day, but it has the better detection rates than most antiviruses and consumes minimal resources.
