Here's another question that requires one of those pills you have ... why would I use Pandora when I can select a song, an album or an artist with GrooveShark? I see 160 and up bitrates. May not have album art but I change it anyway. And it uses the blacklist file. Your name may not be Ferris Bueller but you're still my hero!

ZZJ: Haven't been around for a while because all's been good. Until Pandora's change, that is, and your update which forced me to install the newest and greatest version. Just had one minor issue (and me not wanting to read through 40+ pages of postings); so seeing the quick live chat feature caught my eye. Was more surprised that you were online and available so I was typing as fast as I could to say a quick 'hi', get an answer to my blacklist problem, and let you be on your way to get back to your schoolbooks or next version or enhancement or dinner date. I did upgrade to Pandora One more so for the higher quality, I got my blacklist working, and (as I hope others will do likewise) sent you a donation for something that has given me the opportunity of enjoying hours of listening to music wherever I am. I reminisce about a first girlfriend, a trip to Maui when I was 12, high school days...music has been a big part of my life, so thanks for helping me to relive some wonderful memories! I know this really isn't about iTunes, but I've found out some further information about what iTunes does that was briefly mentioned early on, actually in a previous post. (I'm also hoping that I'm not the only one who uses iTunes lol). Here, I had replied to someone in an Apple forum who was trying to figure out why her album art wasn't "sticking" into the actual music file. She said she was getting 'white' images. This was my reply to her... In the Summary area of that song, does it say "No Artwork Available" in greyed lettering? If it is, as you say, a white screen, then you are possibly saving a blank white image to your songs. Otherwise, that Summary area should show you the album cover (bigger version where you can copy/cut/paste/delete if you go to the Artwork tab. AND this just popped into my head - you can have more than 1 "artwork" stored per music file in iTunes. IF your Summary area does not show the "No Artwork Available", go to the Artwork tab. Look at the slider bar across from Add/Delete. Is the slider all the way to the right? If so (and it isn't grayed out), try sliding it to the left a bit (this reduces the image size so that you can see multiple images if there is more than one). Hoping that this is the case, highlight the "white" or unwanted image(s), then you can push the slider back to the right or leave it as is. For grins, if you did have 2 images stored, you can view them on the iTunes front by looking directly above the album image, in the "Now Playing" bar. You should see arrows on each end. Click one or the other... And after further research and testing, I have found this out: If you use iTune's Get Album Artwork, it will get it if it can find it but that image gets stored in the Album Artwork Download area of your iTunes music directory. IT DOES NOT GET WRITTEN INTO THE ACTUAL MUSIC FILE! If that is what you have done, then you need to go to each song (or if you have multiple songs from an album you can group select and right click to the Get Info area. You must then go to the Artwork area, right click to copy, delete the phantom image, and then right click and paste the image. You are looking at the image that is stored in the iTunes images directory, not the physical music file artwork image. Thank goodness - you can copy that image to Windows clipboard. Go to the Artwork tab and right click on the image and copy (or Ctrl-C). Delete the iTunes image by deleting it, then paste your clipboard image right back by right clicking and pasting (or Ctrl-V). Then click on OK to write the file back with the stored image. Hope this helps!

Foobar seems to be a very versitle interface which uses existing converters (such as LAME). I've converted my MP3s to the more compact MP4s since my cell phone (w/Bluetooth) supports HE-AAC. And I'm anticipating iTunes will eventually jump on the bandwagon. A caveat to my own conversion of MP3s to MP4s was that I didn't want to go from lossy to lossy directly, so I actually went from MP3 to FLAC (using Foobar as lossless), then to HE-AAC MP4. I used Nero's converter to create the HE-AAC files. The Nero AAC standalone converter (http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/nero_aac_ui.htm) has worked great for me and has been the easiest to configure HE-AAC. And when I rip my music CDs, I first create lossless WAV files, then use Nero to create my HE-AAC MP4s. I would load about 25 files at a time and let her rip (any more and I noticed it would crash). The only irritation is that it opens up a DOS window for each song so it would be the primary window. It does close it after each song also, but ... you'll see. Just do it when you are watching TV or something non-PC. But it's a very quick process like Foobar so don't fret.

Hey Tubbers (et al) ... if you guys are looking for an MP4-to-MP3 converter, why don't you use Foobar2000? You just need the LAME encoder (which exists with ZZJ's PS downloader). It will also tell you that you are going from one lossy (MP4) format to another lossy (MP3) format which you are. Just set VBR on (I understand that's preferred instead of always forcing a set bit rate), and use at least 160 or higher. It will move over all (I believe) the existing tags (artist, track name, album name, etc.), except for the album cover. BUT just use another piece of software (iTunes works great) and ask it to get the album cover. Whether you opt to use iTunes to actually play the music is totally up to you, but it is great for updating tags one by one. Foobar2000 is a multi-purpose audio player (yeah I know, Winamp, iTunes, QT, Realplay, so why another one...), but it's rediculously quick to load, you drag files to its plain looking (clean) track area, you have tons of conversion options (I haven't used them all), and it plays Pandora's HE-AAC files very efficiently. (http://www.foobar2000.org/) This should let you spend your time downloading in turbo mode, and you can run Foobar2000 simultaneously without bogging down PS. The problem you will have is figuring out what to do with thousands of audio files!

The file extension shouldn't matter. This is from ZZJ's blacklist example file: # You can export playlists from iTunes as text and use them as blacklists, too. # Just change their extension to ".blacklist.txt" # M3U playlists work as well. Just about anything is accepted. # Place these blacklist files in the root of your save directory. # Comparisons are case-insensitive, paths + extensions are disregarded, and any punctuation is removed. I was also in the dilemna of keeping zero-byte files (which I originally did), or a blacklist. I opted for the blacklist as the number of files exceeded 7k. The only problem with that is I have to update my blacklist file with each batch that I download. Worse is that my keep percentage is only about 5% (I've got over 10k songs in iTunes) and can listen to only so much in any given day, so I end up adding the newly downloaded file list to my existing blacklist file, moving the files to a holding area, and reviewing/weeding using Winamp. Ones I keep I import into iTunes (I don't really use playlists).

It hardly does it now lol (I'm still weeding through all the download I have so far!). It's great and fits perfectly where the widget sits on the right side of the screen. You are so clever! <_<

Just downloaded it. Blacklist didn't hose SProxy this time, but I noticed (maybe it was the same before?), that I have to config to use Blacklist then close settings, then reopen settings and click on load blacklist otherwise if you do it the first time it doesn't seem like it really loads the list. SProxy Mini is running fine (going on 20 minutes now). I looked at the log - I'm thinking you don't need to list the entire blacklist (I didn't look good but did it list all 7.5k songs???). I didn't see anything about being able to download - but then I am ripping on the fly so may not apply. Yep - got your PM thanks. Your explanation gave me a pretty good concept of scripting. I am not sure how I can change the destination where the file goes yet, but gonna see if I can find a PhP language book cuz it looks like fun! Just downloaded and was config'ing ... I hit the reload blacklist button and got this. It closed everything. Do you want me to try again and look for other quirks with Vista?

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html When I first started using Vista, I was only using Windows Media Player (which I've come to know as WMP lol). When I'd click on my MP3 folder, it would take maybe a couple of minutes for the HDD to settle down. The files would show up quickly, but anytime I made an app or Explorer hit that particular directory, ARGH! The system would crawl until the drive stopped whatever it was doing. I read somewhere to disable WMP shell options (which became easily visible with that program ShellExView). Now I can click on my Pandora folder (with 7,500 files) and HDD lights up for about 1 second and it's done. As for Windows Search 4.0, it was one of those downloadable updates you would see if you ran Windows Updates. I'm not sure if it was one of those programs that would automatically install if you had 'auto' turned on, but I'm sure it did show up in your installed programs and could uninstall it - which is what I did. I've read much about Search 4.0 - good and bad. It caused problems for me. I guess I could have config'd it to ignore my media files, but I don't need the system taking ours to index my HDDs. So I noticed 2 different things going on: 1) when I went to my music directory, it would take the HDD forever to settle down until I turned off the WMP shell programs, and 2) once in the directory, heaven forbid I opted to click on the size or date header to sort cuz that would take forever with Search installed. Now if I clicked on a header, it resorts those 7500 files in less than a second. All this FWIW

Do you have a lot of AVI files in that same directory? My laptop was (after 5 years) starting to slow down (running XP Home). My desktop (XP Pro) and laptop were running Nortons AV Corporate. Laptop was used for more open searching and unsafe practices like youtube, unprotected pop-ups, etc. And then it started the 100% CPU with constant HDD light on. I eventually opted to download AVG (free version) and run it. Hundreds of hits from malware, spyware, etc. were found and removed. My HDD started working normal again. FYI I decided to go through a Vista change because I needed to start getting familiar with Vista since I support PCs currently running XP and 2000. I'm using AVG (free) only on this notebook now and things have been running pretty smoothly. Over a few months it did have 100% CPU periods with HDD constant, so I disabled some WMP Shell options and removed Windows Search 4.0 and haven't had 100% CPU problems as of late.

Did you find a resolve to your CPU spike/HDD activity situation?

Not too long ago I was having problems with Outlook email and terribly long lag times when I'd open up Explorer. There were other problems as well and they all seemed to disappear when I turned off Windows Search 4.0.

Nothing major - subfolders cuz I guess this is a whole mini-version of the browswer. Firefox-P is about 46.7 meg total with the components, dictionaries, chrome, plugins, modules, etc. folders. There are a few empty ones. A program that I use reports empty folders so that's how it came up. So what do you suggest - at what point should we use the blacklist -or- stop using the blacklist? I've got 8,700 empty files so far in my download directory just as placeholders.

SProxy with Firefox Portable is cool. Sorry for some reason I thought it wouldn't apply to me - as I thought it was a mini-player only. IE is not the only thing with memory leaks! FF started with about 30,000k and growing slowly. I did notice that when it went through a reload, it didn't release memory back so it's still at around 128,000k and climbing. Are all the empty directories necessary with FF-Portable? I did finally get it to be addressed in SProxy. Hope I got it right for that matter. The line in SProxy on 'Command to run on start' looks like file:///C:/Program%20Files/SProxy/Firefox-P/LaunchFirefoxPortable.exe Also when it opens FF, the screen filled with SProxy 1.002b. I found (close to where the toolbar would be) Pandora Radio and the Launch Pandora Mini buttons. I clicked on mini-player and that opened it and got it going. I closed the big browser window after the mini-player was going...right? lol I thought I'd outline the steps just in case I am doing something wrong, and if there is someone who might have been in my boat - not knowing. Please correct me if something's askew.

I changed the value to 9216000 (1024*9000) and it's run longer than anytime before (good). I've watched memory grow from about 118,000k to (now) 348,000k [352,267k in just about a half minute]. Is this expected to happen with IE? Early on, I use FF to check mail when I needed to. I noticed that it was sluggish but kept going, then there's a burst of speed. I looked at IE and Pandora was asking if I am still there (was in mail for about 45 min and I have it set to refresh at 30 min and source does show refresh @ 1800). I closed IE and reopened it (to release mem and start new). I stopped doing anything else except SProxy and it's been running on its own for a good 3 hours with no "are you there" questions. I am in FF now sending this note (and Task Manager shows IE now at 384,776k of memory). With all this intense memory usage going on, should I use the blacklist (which I'm guessing is caching the song information), or should I just have it continue to check in the download folder for the songs? Add on edit - I just caught IE going through a Pandora reset ... memory was just about 480,000k and after the reset it went down to 75,000k so I guess you have to find a happy medium with amount of mem hoarded and minimal Pandora resets. I don't know if you "reset" - will that cause your song list to recycle (meaning the same song will now recycle for replay]? Maybe you could add a 45 minute reset? I never wanted to use the 1 hour because I thought it was too close to Pandora's time out feature. What would happen if someone were using this with a comp that only had 300 meg of RAM (yeah I know, but I'm sure there are some). Would SProxy and browser crash? Lock up? Maybe a 15 minute reset for those with limited RAM until they can afford to buy more because of download $ savings and programmer donations?

I will change the size length in SProxy.conf (for Vista user). If I'm not mistaken, when I caught SProxy playing the song in normal time, a song before or couple prior had downloaded a 'live' version of something. I'm guessing that these errors are similar. Will let you know what happens.

That's the same problem I had reported with Vista earlier and SProxy. Hopefully if that gets fixed for XP then that will fix the Vista problem I have...do you want me to try and get the Vista logs or no need?

I've been running Vista Business SP1 with ZoneAlarm (free) and AVG antivirus (free), wireless at an average 36k speed rate (router location), and although it can hiccup at times, it's been running fine in turbo mode. Something might happen along the way (haven't watched it 24/7 so monitor the log), but it may go off turbo mode. All I need to do is relaunch it by clicking on the link to reload the page and it's back in turbo. Once in every other day there might be a bigger failure, but I just shut down SProxy, close IE, and reopen and continue. I use IE8 with SProxy, and use FF to do any other browsing. It just seems to be a smoother process especially with the browsers taking up so much RAM from the 1.2 gig I got on this notebook. I will download the latest version but I can live with 8 songs a minute. Seems the album images are being stored properly into the MP4s; all I have to do is erase all the .PNG files after I'm done.

SProxy runs about 23%. Browser takes choke cpu and mem. I have not seen any errors using the most recent version. HOWEVER, I did download the last version (SimpleProxy 1.000d), erased everything that was in the folder, and ran that this afternoon and found this problem in an SP dialog box: Fatal error!
