There MUST be some difference to the INTERNAL hardware involved, otherwise the board wouldn't be what... 25% bigger? That's a huge difference in size, so what's different on the board? Also, this (and a few other similar hacks) makes it look like I was right and there are two antenna mounts on the Fon's board: http://www.jmaxxz.com/index.php?option=com...h&Itemid=35 EDIT: Sorry, did I say 25% bigger, it's more like 35-40% I already got a Fon+ cause it was cheaper, so whatever, I guess I'm just a little disappointed that it's so much bigger, I was going to see if exchanging was an option. I guess I'm just thinking about how/where/when one would use it and how important size would be in it going undetected... There are all these USB power hacks and people mounting them to EEE PCs but I guess I just don't understand that as you can accomplish the same thing by simply running airbase-ng... So as you had intended it, this is obviously something one would drop somewhere and leave... if using it as a network tap, you'd need to get into less open areas to use it, and so size becomes less of a problem, but when using it for Jasager it seems like one wouldn't want to spend time hiding it, just taping it to the bottom of a table or something... putting it in a plant? I guess I'm just thinking about the project on the whole rather than just what one can do to a Fon, but how to use it as well. So what do you think... does size matter? :P lol

Alright, so I was just wondering what the difference was, obviously there are the different ports, and the later two are larger, and they have different firmwares, but beyond that, are there any differences? Looking in the Fon it looks like there were two antenna connections, where as in the Fon+ it doesn't look like there are to me. Which Fon would you think is the best, were they all the same price?

How much bigger? I was looking for like, a picture with both of them in it, but I couldn't find anything. Oh wait, I found dimensions for the 2100 "Small formfactor (93.5 mm x 25.5 mm x 70 mm)" and they look smaller than the other dimensions I saw... I'll try to find them. EDIT: Haha! "93.5 x 25.5 x 110" so 4cm hmm? That's a lot bigger than I expected actually.

I just got my Fon+ today, and I have to say, it looks a whole lot bigger than the normal Fons I've seen, is that so, or is it just me?

Would the efficiency gain be worth the added cost? After all you said the point was to create an inexpensive pen testing took right? More than doubling the cost would have to make this work much better, and at the moment there don't seem to be any real problems. The only thing I see wanting would be an app which scans traffic and saves certain predetermined types of data (logins, addresses, names, cookies, whatever) and uploads it somewhere. You could have it save it to an SD card if you modded it which might even be easier, but realistically, in keeping with the idea on hand, you don't want to HAVE to be able to recover it.

Er... one Fon, so far as I know, can't run as a wireless client and AP at the same time, can it? :/ If so, awesome, but yeah, I was curious.

So, something just hit me, and it might all be in my head, but Darren talks, and posts, as though he uses the Fon in all cozy in that little pineapple cup with the antenna sticking out through the straw hole and room enough for batteries and love. Now, like I said, maybe that's just my perceptual suspicion, but how would the Fon connect to the internet while in the pineapple like that, as I recall while using it on the show he had it in his pocket connected via ethernet cable, so... yep, that. Am I knowingly wondering about nothing, or am I completely missing something?

I went WM onto BB and now the iPhone. The one thing I miss is how on a BB if you text or MMS someone, it has indicators to show that it was sent, and also if it was recieved. Oh, and having a text outbox was great in SF cause you lose signal on BART but get it for like 5 seconds here and there, and that made communication on BART doable. I live in LA now so that's no longer a big deal. Also, I did some looking, you guys have any idea where I could pick up a Qualcom Gobi mini PCI-E card? The iPhone is the best phone for most consumers is what I meant, seeing that for most people the best features are simple and pretty which Apple nails with most of it's products. There's a jailbreak that let's you tether, but it costs $30 and who knows if Apple break it. :( Awesome though, apparently the euro P has a sim card slot, and while the Japanese one doesn't come with a WWAN card, it does have an open mini PCI E slot, and a card slot in the case... So, presumably, awesome. I didn't want to deal with cloning, I cloned a couple sims back in the late 90s but ive heard things have gotten much harder. Yes well while the iPhone remains the best phone on the market, it's still dicked when it comes to basic shit like tethering and MMS... Is it Apple's fault? Probably not, there was a tethering app but At&T made them take it out of the app store, which is full of find anything good anymore; which is apples fault kind of... It's herd to remember that for 90+% of consumers simple and pretty are the best features one can offer. Hell, simply using AIM puts you in the top 30% of computer users... I have a friend asking me to pirate some infomercial workout cause he does know how torrent files work... And cause infomercials never lie, right? Rant rant rant... Hmm, makes sence. I've been bouncing around a number of ideas, like I said, I'm interested in seeing how the build in antenna performs, but I helped a friend set up an external antenna for his laptop a couple years ago by mounting an antenna mount in the side of the case. Another option is always getting a WWAN card as the slot it open and cloning my SIM onto it instead of going for two wifi connections... Stupid AT&T not letting me tether.

Huh... I never thought about switching cases, sweet. And if you think the 500mw alpha sucks, what would you suggest as a better USB wireless adaptor?

That was exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I really wanna see the results of laptopmag's wifi tests, but they haven't done any really nice ones on this just yet. I'm going to run ubuntu till other versions of Linux can work with the gma 500 it's rocking. The 2140 was my first choice, but the nasty extended battery ruined it for me, and express 54 seems to have no support, while the 34 leaves a large gap. :( Sony said they wanted to use a larger screen, but needed room for the antennas, so if they really put thought into them, I have high hopes. Any info on the Alpha USB wifi device I mention? Does it need two USB ports? Two wireless connections would be nice for karma as a wired connection isn't often available, and the iPhone is still being neutered by apple and AT&T, however much I happen to love it.

How would I go about seeing if I can find a better wireless card than that which comes in the vaio p? I'm not sure of the connection type as the tear down site is in Japanese and I'm stuck on my phone for a few more days, but that's easy enough to find out. A bigger question was how do I know how powerful a card I can use? I know there are 1000mw cards, but I'd guess those are for routers, not laptops, and the laptop might not be able to push that much juice. I was looking at that alpha card which does 500mw, but I'm a little unclear on how it connects. It's USB, but from the way people talk about it, it sounds like it needs two USB ports, though that's never explicitly said. Anyway, let's start with that. Thanks!

So, this tiny UMPC has the Atheros chipset... would it be possible to put Jasager on this? Also, I assume you couldn't simply put Jasager on a netbook of some kind due to the chipsets and what not, but let's say one had an HP Mini 2140 (when it comes out) would there be a way to achieve the same effect, either Linux or Windows, the OS doesn't matter.
