  1. Because this would be about soceity and pop culture and less on technology. This isn't for ethics or psycology, it should be as technical as possible.
  2. So I have to do a presentation on something technical for my computer engineering class. The professor created a list of students and randomly generated a date for each student to speak, and I'm of course, first. It needs to be 5-7 minutes long, so I need enough information to last that long. It should be somewhat related to software or hardware (preferably hardware). "The History of Video Games" is bad but, "PS3 Cell Processor Architecture" is perfect. I kinda wanted to do something on openCL/Grand Central, as it's perfect for this class (it was just redesigned to include multicore processors and GPUs), but I'm not sure I can find enough information to talk for at least 5 minutes. The wikipedia articles are stubs. Any suggestions? Arduino is already taken I think. Doing something on "security" doesn't really apply to my class, but perhaps something like deep packet inspection might. EDIT: Examples of what other's have done: Virtual machines, Flash storage, Hardware multithreading, networks, PowerPC etc.
  3. Yeah, it's well understood that teaching kids about technology is great and all. EDIT: I don't think anyone here has ever said that it's good for core school education or fundamental classes. Everyone seems to cite how great giving kids technology because it did good things for them or teaching security is great or blah blah blah (but I may have forgotten what people wrote over the few days that this has been going on). There is no conclusive evidence that 1:1 programs improve grades, test scores, or student knowledge. So if that's the case, why spend all that money on technology when so many other school resources need funding for improvement. I don't see why giving each student a computer is all that necessary, a lab is fine. 7th graders are even less deserving. Computer demands are greater in high school and prepping students for college computer use would prove more useful.
  4. Unless it's child porn, which is apparently so awful and prevalent that it warrants the violation of net neutrality. It's like, their only argument for taking NN down...,
  5. You learned a lot about computers and hardware. You learned nothing about math, reading comprehension, english, science, writing skills, etc etc etc..., Which is more important for 99% of the population?

  7. *sob* I can rip it and put it on my website if you really want to see it. It's really damn good.
  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN2HAroA12w As a rabbid Twitter fanboy, I appreciate this video. EDIT: For the out of US people: http://www.clarkdot.com/clark.site/Blank.html
  9. "Under God" was added in 1952 and America is definitely not going away form religion when abortion, gay marriage, and sexual education are "issues." It's fake controversy that only exists because the religious right wants it to. If religion played no role, like it was intended to, those matters would have been cleared up forever ago. Not saying the I necessarily disagree with the religious right, but just throwing this out there.
  10. Twitter! Probably a correct argument. Just because a 3 year old can apparently use a computer, doesn't mean that it makes education in a generic public school better or more beneficial in the long run. EDIT: Albeit computer education is of course important, math/science/english/reading comprehension/etc should come first at almost all costs.
  11. Boom. Roasted. I totally agree with this point. It's stealing, it shouldn't be free, the RIAA just can't go about it the right way. As for everything else, very constructive work VaKo. I approve.
  12. I don't think cost made a factor. I think it's just straight up impossible no matter how much money one has -- there are really specific parts that will never be purchasable. So they make around $40 per console, the retailers make about $50 - stocking/shipping fees.

    Apple

Did the brush work? I don't think I was put on hold either, just heard while being transferred too.

    Apple

Because it'd be like buying Rock Band from Best Buy and having your house burn down and expecting Best Buy to give you a new one. I don't think Amazon would do the same . . . , best part about Apple's tech support is that the people speak impeccable english and the waiting music is awesome (Cake, Gorillaz, Postal Service, Death Cab, YES PLEASE). I had to call Microsoft earlier this week to cancel my Xbox live subscription. Apparently when you buy one month on the Xbox it actually means, "One month recurring." The guy was from another country and had to go through all the MS-BS to convince to keep my account. Talk about frustrating. All in all, I've had Apple do several out of warranty repairs for free. They replaced my hard drive after it failed, replaced all the polycarbonate on my MacBook body because there were cracks, and given me a replacement iPod when my dock connector was damaged. Apple tends to know when you're sincere or not (ie: they won't replace some lying about their iPod that fell in the toilet).
  15. http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2009/0...-a-backlash.ars 'nuff said. Anecdote: I know for a fact that I pay more attention when my iPhone and computer are off. EDIT: In my opinion: Without a comprehensive restructuring of the education system that takes advantage of the technology, it just doesn't make sense.
  16. If it was that easy, Nintendo would have done it, no? At least, I hope. The Wii, until recently, didn't have a lot of content to fill up the average user's drive. Example: My roommates and I have a 360, but we're only using maybe 10 or 20 GBs of our 60 GB HD. Almost all of it is Skate 2 and GTA 4 being copied. Now that things are becoming tight, Ninty says they'll unlock the SD card for storage. 500 GBs is OVERkill for anything the Wii will ever use at this point. Even still, Nintendo is right to worry about hackers stealing ROMs. Just because the games are old, doesn't mean they should be free/stolen. PS- Dem 'shops are mad uggs. PPS- Stop complaining about the Wii -- it's not the 360/PS3, never will be, and is FINE the way it is...
  17. Some just don't see it. You're right though, it shouldn't be correct to compare apples to ... hackintoshes and bargain PCs but those that drink the haterade are going to, deal with it. There are other factors involved too, like a typical Mac will last about two years longer than a similarly spec'ed PC and whatever. I never, ever regret my Apple related purchases because I see it differently. I'm not stupid, there's a reason I (and many others) do it.
  18. MY first computer that I paid for myself was: ..., which eventually became the family computer when the Gateway we had with XP died. Strange. Families was an Acer with Windows 95 in my mother's house and a Micron with Windows 95 in my father's house, purchased at about the same time. Those were the days. I currently have a MacBook, so does my twin. My older brothers have MacBook Pros and my mother has a Mac Mini.
