1. I am setting up a couple of esx servers this week. one will be for my business and the other for my uncle's. the issue i have is that i want to set up a vpn for both domains his.com and mine.com, i will set up a trust between the two so i can manage both without having to physically having to be there the probaly is even though we are going to be using two different ip address my question is how do i set it up on the router so that it know which users to authenticate for which domain or will the trust relationship mean that anyone will be able to authenticate.? I have a toss up of which router i will use. I have a Cisco which i'm not really a fan of and i will either use pfSense, Vyatta or Endian, Probably endian. any advice on how i should do this? its one business class dsl line and he has about 5 static ips.

Thanks

2. Are you sure your hosting provider doesn't block 2525 aswell? Get one of your friends that is on an external network to 'telent <your-test-exchange-server> 2525' and see if they can reach it. This would be for testing purposes but not practical...

Also, you can't set up an MX record which tells the querier what port it should use. All it is, is DNS. DNS is hostname to IP lookup... and in case of MX.. has a priority. If your host doesn't allow port 25 traffic, then you might be in trouble... at the end of the day.. all SMTP traffic will be knocking on your door on port 25... you could always set up a NAT that translates that 25 to another port number internally to your network.. but if that 25 isn't even reaching your network because of your provider, i don't think there is much you can do.

welll dyndns has a mail hope service outbound.mailhop.org that uses port 25 2525 10025 i put that in as the smart host instead of using dns for an mx lookup. i think the issue im having is trying to get outbound.mailhop.org in my mx record with my isp. when i created the record with the smart host it wasn't resolving properly

3. I have recently taken a class on exchange in school and i am trying to create a test server. i created a mail box for a user user@kccsnyc.com and in dyndns i created a host and configured mail routing. then on my godaddy domain a created an mx record host is @kccsnyc.com and for goes to i put in my dyndns host. when i go to mxtoolbox.com i see that it resolves to my current ip address. however i still cant send or receive email on the internet. after some research i found out that cablevision is blocking port 25 i changed the port to 2525 and allowed 2525 through my router to the ip of the exchange server,. so my question is what now? by default servers will be using port 25 is there a way that i can set it up in the mx record so servers know to use a non standard port? i tried created an smtp connector that uses the outbound.mailhop.org as a smart host but still all my mail is stuck in the cue and i still cant receive emails from the internet it comes back with this

4. I there a way i can make an acl for pfsense that will only allow one or two specific computers to be allowed to use bittorrent? I allow my neighbors to use my 30Mbs connection over Secure wifi for a fee ofcourse, and even though i stipulate that no one can use p2p networks of any sort ( except me of course :) ) i dont trust them not to so i need a way to deny it completely except for my use. any ideas?

EDIT: What i ended up doing was to block tcp/udp ports 6881-6889 for the ip of the wireless switch( netgear wps 606 i think) they use to connect to my network. i have no way of really testing whether it was enough because i don't want them aware that i am actively restricting traffic but since my wallet is at stake if they get caught downloading anything i feel i am justified

5. For my college internship, I've been put in charge of documenting the organizational structure and procedures of a small web design business. The owner wants me to take all of the information in his head and put it on paper so that its easier for others to see. He wants me to outline procedures for when they get a new client or a new project for an exiting client. He also wants to visual see the employee structure (who specializes in what and who is doing what for which client). Currently they use OnTime to manage projects, but not being familiar with it, I don't know if it can help with what I've been asked to do. His goal is to make things easier as the company expands. So far, I've been using spreadsheets and MS Visio to represent the data, but didn't know if there was program (Windows or Mac) dedicated to a task like this. Thanks

If you have a LAMP server you can use Orange HRM for the employee structure stuff. It's Pretty easy to use and you could probably use Vtiger to handle the other stuff that way everything is centralized. the paid alrenative is probably MS Dynamics it's windows based and you can probably accomplish all the things you are looking to do, i Just usually go open source first

6. hmm.... Ever thought maybe one of your heatsinks are off a tad? Maybe on your vid crd? I have noticed that vista does well in supressing bsods, but that doesnt mean something is not wrong.

Maybe a pwr sup issue. How many watts you running? Also could be incompatibility between components.

Let's be like house. Start bouncing ideas.. GO!

I actually just changed my psu tthis week went up to a 650 instead of a 550. i been checking all my fans work and fsx works, sort of, i'm beginning to think it's because i'm using 64 bit issue, I had that problem with star wars EAW also had to fine a non cd crack designed to take advantage of the extra RAM

7. After being away from the flight sim world for a while i decided to re install fs9 on my maching

core 2 quad 2.4

4gigs ddr 800

2x 9500gt sli

vista ultimate 64

the game crashes at the splash screen i tried running in xp compatibility mode as admin and even disabled uac and no luck. been searching online for answers but haven't found any. I tried fsx but to be honest i don't like it. i like to fly from the 2d cockpit and every add on that i use with fsx starts in vc mode and the 2d cockpit either looks crappy or is incomplete. anyone had problems with this or know what i should try to fix it? i am running the latest nvidia drivers and vista is current ( and before you say it xp doesn't run well on this hardware it blue screens after about 20mins)

8. Also, this is semi-offtopic, but what are your thoughts on the following degrees?

- The Bachelor of Computer Science

- The Bachelor of Computing (Networks)

- The Bachelor of Science in Information Systems

- The Bachelor of Science (Business Information Technology)

- The Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

As I said before, my maths isn't up to scratch, and I'm not a good programmer.

However, the mere act of writing on this forum shows that I'm willing to learn.

Would appreciate your advice here, if you'd prefer I can put this question in another topic?

Thank you,

Hy Zaret

Dude my advice, get your hands on as much as you can. I started in IT in my 20's and you have more certs than i do which is great because with age responsibility increases and the time to learn decreases. but just like you i am into a lot of stuff and even though my degree is in networking I plan on getting a masters in Security or COmputer Forensics starting next year and now i am trying to get into cyber law enforcement with any three letter government agency that i can get into. so I don't think that it really matters what which undergrad degree you have your other qualifications and experience is what will count most. So don't sweat it pick one that seems like you would be most interested in and have fun with it while you can it becomes work vs 100% fun that you probably see it as now

9. Ok, the back story. Currently I own a NetGear FVS318 Router, it has quite a few features and I like the 8 ports however it is slow. I have a 15mb down and a 1.5mb up connection currently I see speeds of <5mb/s down and don't even ask about up. I have turned off logging and that seemed to help some, kinda.

Now heres the question, what is a good firewall/router distro of linux. I am used to debian esk distro's and I would like your opinion on this matter. I pulled up a list on wikipedia, and have looked into engarde a little, and theres quite a few more, just don't know how to hack away at it.

The hardware:

Via c7d 1.5(?)

1gb ddr2

10/100/1000 onboard nic

10/100 via pci (also has a pci_e x16 :P)

Thank you in advanced.

Clark Connect COmmunity is great. put i currently use pfSense. both work great. CC has a lot of add ons and it's deb based so a lot of deb stuff will work pfSense is Unix based and has it's own add ons but in my experience not as many, also CC is very straight forward and easy to use pf has a lot of the same features but it's kind of like cisco in that pretty much everything is turned off unless you configure it to do otherwise.

10. Always wanted a server.

Maybe its because I always feel like I'm running out of space (torrents, music etc), or maybe its just to mess about with.

One of my friends gave me an old PC, so I've decided to attempt to turn it into a wee file server. Might make it a little web server later on, if i ever decide to try some ruby on rails programming.

It's specs are pretty poor.

I think I'm going to use Arch Linux, mainly just because I'm using that on my main machine, this laptop, so I'm quite used to it.

Its a 667Mhz Intel Celeron. Hard drives are capped as ATA 66, which sucks, since I have so many ATA133 hard drives kicking about. It's rocking a 10/100 networking port, a "3D Rage Pro" dedicated graphics card (get in there!). It came to me with 128Mb RAM. But I'm buying two 512mb DIMMs from eBay tomorrow. I accidentally broke the 250Watt power supply (loose power cable to a hard drive.. woops), but i replace it with a spare from an old PC (350W.. yus.)

I know I'm not going to get anything blisteringly efficient by the end of it. But aslong as it's bordering between "Usable" and "Darn Efficient", I'll be happy.

So a few question.

Im using an ATA133 Hard Drive in there just now, 120gb. It's working just now, but the chipset only plays nice with ATA66. Is it dangerous using the faster hard drive, or will it just run at the slower speed?

Also, is this even worth it? Or should I give up, chuck it in the loft and buy a cheap barebones bundle and start from there?

Basically, if its worth it, ill buy a wireless N-draft card, and shove it in my warddrobe, using SSH to access it and maintain it.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Pritchardo92

It should just run at 66 but you can get a pci ide card that should do the job you can just boot from the onboard ide bus and store files on the the pci bus. I think it will work fine as long as you don't try to use it to stream stuff like video. I think the let down there is the ATA66 because i have used older mchines to do the same job

11. Get hold of an ALIX or WRAP firewall kit, then run PFsense.

I actually used pfsense for a week but i couldnt get it to work with xbox live which is why i'm using clark connect. but i like the way your idea sounds like the best way to go. 5W its next to nothing and is def cheaper than building using computer parts

12. I know a security conscious group like this will be reluctant to answer but i a reason. currently i have an old dell computer running clark connect community edition 4.3 and it works great. But the computer it's running on is big and takes up a lot of room on my desk, power is also a concern, i know that it's not burning the full 250 because i have most of the integrated stuff turned off but none the less i'm sure it's using more than a dedicated firewall will. I have been looking at some mainstream stuff like Cisco,Juniper, and SonicWall but the problem i have with them is i need a router that is uPnP aware. I have some video game consoles that need Upnp. i've bought an old cisco 1711 and no moatter i do it will not allow xbox live traffic. I been doing research online on the used stuff i found on ebay but none support uPnP out of the box. I am at the point that i am considering buying a really cheap microATX case and motherboard and a processor and run CC on a compact flash card but i am pretty sure that will prove more expensive than the ebay solution. i need the security the hardware firewall offers but since this is a home/office i still need some consumer features, soooooooooooooooooooooooooo anyone have any ideas?

13. Latitudes are good machines and rarely have non-human caused problems.

i don't know about that i'm a dell tech and it seems all the laptops i work on are Latitudes. and they all have the same issue. there is a flaw in the design that overheats the GPU and after a few weeks it eventually fails and at times it's worse. when it gets really bad I usually have to replace the board as well as the CPU. I say Toshiba. I've had this thing for 3 years and beat the hell out of it, i'm finnally about ready to replace the original battery. Personally from my point of view don't get any dell unless you are willing to pay for support because i promise you that you will need it

14. No problem. Wordpress is brilliant... especially when you start using some of the plugins that are out their for it. I only wish I had found it sooner then I did.

ok so now i have a new issue. when i add the external links to the header file it still re-directs me to the root page of the blog or sometimes it thinks the link is a sub directory of the blog snd i end up with this http://kingscountycomputersolutions.com/ki...act/contact.php

any idea as to whats wrong?

15. I need to set up an SNMP monitoring system at work. Ideally using a free and open source solution. It'd likely run in a VM but hardware could be provided for it if necessary.

It should offer reporting capability but the important part is a wallboard style display, so I can have it showing on a large plasma screen in the IT office and if the board is green, everything is good, but a red flashing light means a server has just exploded - that sort of thing.

I've been googling but I'm not finding anything I like so far, and recomendations?

http://spiceworks.com/

16. I installed the nvidia drivers on my opensuse 11.1 system tonite from the download.nvidia.com repository and after i restarted i was in the terminal after is elevated to root and typed init 5 i was still in runlevel 3. this has happened to me twice today. the first time i reinstalled but openSUSE probably takes a long as windows does to install so i don't want to go through that again only to come back to the same issue.

17. I am trying to get into video production. nothing too serious but eventually i would like to publish them on the web so i need something feature packed. i know premiere pro is the big dog on the block but i don't have the money for it so i am looking for a free alternative for linux or windows. i need to encode in various formats like flash and eventually hd (when i get an hd camera). any suggestions?

18. Ok I'll give this a shot....

1. Use that router/firewall as your gateway to the internal network. There is no way to keep the wifi traffic off the LAN unless you have some advanced ACLs or packet filtering going on, which I doubt your 2Wire router does. If you lock down your 610N properly, you should be fine.

you could also but this device on a dmz. for your gaming devices you will have to forward the ports manually. and personally i think the 360 is the better platform for viewing media

19. I'm actually in the middle of doing that know. I'm transferring files from a Vista desktop to an XP laptop which isn't working to great haha.

Both vista and xp have a wizards that's supposed to help with this but i have never tried it. i usually do it manually or i use synctoy. another relatively easy way to go is to use live mesh. i use this to sync documents and pictures on all my computers. it takes all of the networking headache out of the equation

20. I don't think you need any thing more powerful, more efficient would be nice from the less electricity side. P4 at 3GHz is crap for a desktop, for a computer that doesn't do much that's fine. You probably don't need 1GB RAM either, 512MB would do.

RAID0? Unless you don't care about the data on there that's not particularly good. You should consider getting either two 2TB drives and putting them in RAID1 or 3 1TB drives and putting them in RAID5. Each will result with 2TB of relatively secure storage, the two 2TB drives would be more efficient in terms of power usage, but the three 1TB are probably cheaper initially.

i agree that stuff is over kill for you purposes you would be wasting you money IMHO i think you should consider extending you storage for sure maybe get a couple of 1TB drives and use them externally as additional storage maybe move the old data on the externals for an archive and use the internals for everyday use. that's essentially what i do with my whs system. i have about 1TB of internal storage that i use to run my nightly diffs and to stream content to my 360 and other computers and i have a RAID array running on usb and i use sync toy every couple off weeks to move my video and stuff like that over to the RAID to keep the internal storage free. a bit inefficient i know but i haven't had the time to implement an automatic solution. btw that server is an old p D 820 running 2.8 and 1.5 gigs of RAM. even with every computer streaming at the same time it never breaks a sweat i use maybe 50% cpu at the max

21. Thank you. But how do you get to those public documents on another computer?

i'm assuming that you already have them on the same workgroup. they way i do it is i create a share on all the computers that i want to have access to. for instance i like to keep the pictures and documents folders on my computers synced plus on occasion i need to access other stuff so for vista what i did was went to computer right clicked on the users folder and i enabled sharing, this will in turn enable sharing for all the sub folders, you can change the security permissions to allow anyone to read or right to that folder and it's sub folders or you can leave it so only the person who's user account it is so they would need a password to access their files. in xp its pretty much the same procedure except if you don't have xp pro you can't configure folder permissions so everyone will have access to the shared files

22. insert this code in or before the

section of the page and it should load all your wordpress stuff. you can even use the functions.

<?php /** Loads the WordPress Environment and Template */
require('./wp-blog-header.php'); ?>

just make sure that './wp-blog-header.php' reflects the location of that file on your server.

Example: './wordpress/wp-blog-header.php'

thanks did that but it still wont load the page just displays the html nothing else. i store the pages that i created in a separate folder so i con get confused with the wp stuff.

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>KCCS: Error</title>

<?php /** Loads the WordPress Environment and Template */
require('../wp-blog-header.php'); ?>

</head>

<body>

<h1 align="center"> OOPS! There was a problem with sending your message. Please try again later.</h1>

23. I've been looking around for plugins that would let me execute php on static pages in wordpress 2.7 and i found php-exec but the php is being removed after the page is loaded a few times. so i finally decided that the best what to go is probably to create a page outside of wordpress and use includes to bring the theme to the new page however since i am a total noob with php and wordpress i am not sure exactly how to do this. anyone have any thoughts?
