  1. Thanks for sharing your find!
  2. All good advice. Obviously any place you interview will have biases so it's goo to be a an all-arounder at this point. I'd definitely recommend experience with C and C++ as they are probably the most dangerous languages (both security and fragility) out there. Scripting languages are hot, incorporating a lot of the java/c# type runtime support so garbage collection and reference handling are important. It's still probably a bit early for functional languages in the real world but knowing how they work would be good for interview time. Just be VERY careful exhibiting any love for any one type of language/environment during an interview. If you go into a Cobol shop and start preaching Haskell, remember the words "Would you like fries with that?" because that's what you'll be saying every day!
  3. It's worth the view. Do check it out, just make sure you need that much sarcasm and bitterness.
  4. I'd be keeping my personal stuff somewhere else... (grin)
  5. I thought I'd read that most ethernet over powerline solutions were capable of 200mbs (dependent on installation). To start at 85 seems a little slow. But since your buddy paid for them and you're getting to play with them the price seems about right.
  6. It's only a couple of months before the new i7 boards are supposed to be out. Should shave $100 or more off the motherboard and probably even perform better.
  7. That should make a huge diff. I'd definitely use the same block size in and out. But it might be worth trying for a very big block size (1/3 physical memory maybe) to do a few big reads and writes. Your original might have been doing it a single byte at a time - since it writes a whole block, it's not going to be fast. Measure and verify. (and tell us what you find. at 6T you're probably using some hardware to manage the array and it might have some preferences as to block size)
  8. If all you want is php/mysql and some other things and aren't going to do anything to get you thrown off the network, you might consider dreamhost - They're a Hak5 advertiser. A little google work will show that Bluehost (and many other budget hosting companies) have had significant bouts of "stupid". All of the unlimited bandwidth and storage offers have significant limitations on what it can be used for (no mirroring, no personal backups that kind of thing) Most will ban you without refund without warning for it. I've been with dreamhost for a long time. Use this link http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?76032 to give the credit to Hak5. (Honest, it's their referral code). Check out the support forums (if you can) of any hosting company you are interested in. If they're not open, don't sign up. They're hiding something.
  9. Congratulations! (anyone else have visions of some poor guy building his own machine from scratch at the component level? Back when you REALLY built them?)
  10. Most older tv's are generally 640x480 with massive overscan so using it as a monitor is really tough. Now, sending winamp output to it (MST3K) is totally the right thing to do.
  11. Fear the pineapple. You might want to watch some of the newer shows.
  12. It makes the job of spreading botnets so much easier!
  13. Image Image Image Image. Now that I've got your attention. IMAGE that machine! When they just accept UAC for everything you'll wish you had an... IMAGE! (Sorry, just got finished reimaging another machine because people don't watch what they're doing) Does "Steady State" work with Vista? That might be an option.
  14. We've already been over this on these forums. If Acer doesn't pop it up, look for AAO (Acer Aspire One). Yeah, for many people they rock. Are you one of them? Dunno. If they have to get out the "Big Drill" at the bowling alley, not for you. If you have vision problems, not for you. But for the quality and price it's hard to beat them. And don't be a wimp - get the 160g 6cell.
  15. The cuckoo's egg by Cliff Stoll is a fun read. Although it's old and more of a novel than an instruction book it does give some insight into the administrator and law enforcement mind.
  16. And - unless you're dealing with old school tech, you don't actually low-level format anymore. Low level formatting was for MFM, RLL and ESDI drives to teach the controller and hard drive to work together - and if you had one of those you'd probably not be running XP. Old School? I was there when they built it.
  17. Check out an early episode of Hak5 to see how they did it!
  18. Did you know that there's a SHOW associated with these forums? Gaining admin access on windows boxes has been discussed like a BAZILLION times. You might want to actually WATCH it. Even Norton probably can't stop a determined admin from an uninstall. Now, if you're trying to do it so parents don't notice - Just buy another machine and let his parents know that he's using it. It's called a "Red Herring", look it up.
  19. That sony was FREAKIN' HUGE! That guys pocket must be deep enough to put a small child in!
  20. You need to pass your script to cmd.exe to be run. try "cmd.exe /c program.bat" You can easily monkey with your scripts using "Scheduled Tasks" in the control panel.
  21. Check your router's uptime. I had one router that would reset on it's own pretty regularly. A firmware update solved it. P.S. Where/How did you do that scan?
  22. He's right there from the start! Camera Hog! (grin)
  23. It really is hard to balance information and entertainment. Information is available on the web, it's just not as cute as Kerby. I agree that dumbing it down is a bad idea. I think we've heard from both Matt and Darren that Rev3 does not have editorial control over content. That doesn't mean that there isn't SOME input from the sales side of Rev3 but they're all smart and experienced people that know one show can't have all the viewers (despite what American Idol does for Fox). Would you say that the last episode contained better content than previous season 4 shows or worse? Was it more clearly and confidently presented? Or was it just another example of dumbing things down to attract the "unwashed masses" to the Hak5.org world? Chris is a nice guy and his last presentation was much better than his first. To have the guts to go on camera at all is to be respected. In my mind, Darren and the editing on the GPU cracker was spot on for getting the information into your head with a solid understanding so that you could do much more. I know Darren reads these forums (and I suspect the others do too) and takes all this information to heart. If there are constructive ideas, give them. If you have ideas for spots - share them, write them or even better, RECORD THEM. I'd think it'd be awesome to have a Hack Of The Week with a 2 minute with a Hak5'er. Either at work or at home or - pwning on the road. But, if you want it to be smart we've got to help, even if it's just encouragement.
  24. Sweet! Thanks for the news. (And your English is nothing you need to apologize for. We regularly maim it in embarrassing ways making us look like idiots.)
