  1. Ok,this is weird. Until recently I've always had my own firewall but I'm finding that some of the people I support (think Parents) have managed to, even with NAT and windows firewall continue to get infected and reinfected every couple of weeks. At work I have a $25k firewall to prevent my 500 users from being pwned. My problem is how do I protect this rather wild user with a compulsion to click any flashing button? I was thinking - perhaps there is someone with a say Palo Alto or a SonicWall or equally awesome and enthusiastic firewall that will rent out socks access to this user on a monthly basis. Or is there another incredibly cheap solution short of taking her machine away? And no, a tablet isn't a solution for her, she has some things that simply must be done on a pc on a monthly basis - I thought about it. I'm still thinking about it but no... Any ideas or recommendations? When google doesn't seem to pop any ideas it's really surprising. Wholly
  2. Why should you think you'd be safe anywhere on the net? 2.5 days and he's already jaded. Must be a record. Unfortunately the Hak5 forums are a target for attacks. Since I've joined these forums I think we've been hacked twice. It's just the way things are. You learn to live with it or disconnect from the net. I'm not about to let them take it from me.
  3. wikipedia to the rescue - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_codecs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_codecs File format: AVI - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Video_Interleave MP4 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14 If it's a school project you won't mind having to read them for yourself I hope.
  4. It's fairly common for the last couple of years.
  5. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=How+to+burn+psx+games...burnt+psx+games Beyond that you probably won't find us much help.
  6. Dude. Learn to use Google. Even Wikipedia has the info. Even worse you posted the exact same question in other forums - and again, not even appropriate forums. For a first post as a member this is not a great start.
  7. Or just search the forums for the answer to your question that has been asked a sagan number of times. (OK, maybe not a sagan, but it seems like it's once a month)
  8. Dunno about the mac backup, but you might want to check out unRaid.
  9. It's because they think we're google. "how to" works better than "how do I" with google. It's a shame they don't read the forum intros that say that we simply won't be doing that.
  10. If the choice is between the two the question comes down to "Do you have friends?" If you do, you probably want the 360. Xbox Live makes for a nice multiplayer experience. Playstation makes everyone roll their own multiplayer so it's hit or miss depending on the title. Netflix implementation is pretty slick and works well. If you have bluray disks, then you might want the playstation. Tons of horsepower, but it's hard to harness for developers yet. When it's good, it's incredible. Current netflix implementation is horrid, ugly, chunky. Hopefully they'll fix it but I doubt it. The 360 example was too good to ignore, but they did. Otherwise see what games you like and where most of them are. It's nice to have choice, but sometimes its confusing.
  11. Why not just let them watch at the Hak5.org site so that the guys can get viewer statistics and pay the bills? Season 1 http://www.hak5.org/category/episodes/page/9 It's really important that they have numbers they can show to advertisers so they can collect money to pay for hospital stays. And if you really were an old time hak5 watcher you'd know: There's no point in Hak5 (Check the notes)
  12. Third message on this forum has some advice that worked for someone. Using a toothbrush. http://techforums.nintendo.com/nins/board/...message.id=4663
  13. Hey, has anyone out there mucked around with Dokan? It's effectively a windows implementation of FUSE (user space file system) and includes library bindings and a test implementation. One allows you to mount an SSH login as a drive to windows. Pretty cool stuff and could be way interesting. Check it out: http://dokan-dev.net/en/ - Homepage http://dokan-dev.net/en/download/ - Download page for the library, ruby & .Net bindings and an implementation of an SSH mounter. It's a little rough but it seems to function! Wholly
  14. Just grab a free ssh shell account from a place like http://freeshell.org/ Or find other places here - http://shells.red-pill.eu/

  16. That would explain why he can't call the cops!
  17. Libsyn is also a great solution for many podcasts as they are flat rate for an open bandwidth. This allows a small podcast to grow or be slashdotted without killing the creators. It's designed for podcasting audio/video so avoids rolling your own solution and includes tracking information you can use to convinces advertisers that you have an interesting following.
  18. There's no more coverage than that! If you can't sell it with both of those, you're pricing it too high.
  19. There's no best, otherwise there wouldn't be 100 distros out there. You can't really ask others because they'll generally just tell you their favorite or the generic "big ones". Get off your ass and try em. It's not a commitment anymore. Fire up a live CD and play with it. It's easy now.
  20. I wasn't thinking of an ARMY of them but I like where you're going. What I'm interested in is if it is transparent or it has it's own backing. and just how hackable is the controller. I'm worried that it's just an animated gif viewer with a 40 minute battery life.
  21. http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashd...-Paper-Magazine I so want to get hold of a couple of these. It could be so much fun! Anyone in an area that is going to get these ads?
  22. The links are in the freakin' show notes. You do know that the shows have notes with links to everything they talk about? You do know that these forums are attached to a show, right? Google-fu fail.
