Not a white box yet, but getting there
The original idea when Hak5 started on ESXi was to replace the old dual AMD MP win xp file server and a 733 p3 SME 7.4 - combine both.
Had most of the gear to setup a dual core opteron system - just MB and raid card needed.
This test mess was fine until you started talking about iscsi / nic teaming / maybe fibre. ( care to do more of a show on them - hint ) Need more slots / ports.
The soon to be - maybe boxed - most parts from ebay and not all here yet.
Supermicro X7DAE $51 ( got 2 but the other was $128.50 )
ide to cf $2 - had the 8Gb cf.
4GB DDR2 $89 - add more when i know it all works.
Xeon's - with luck - $300-$400 each.
LSI MegaRAID SATA 300-8X $122.50 - the sata backplane, found while looking for raid cards - $22 each - the inner nerd could not resist all the LED's.
HD's - 1TB $110/$130 each x 4 or 8.
and yes - still need to find a case.
All Prices in Australian Monopoly Money.
Wish me luck.
Edit - anyone try vSMP Foundation.

Yep - VM info is good timing, updating my home server PC from 2 to one with it.
in case like me you only have is an IDE drive on hand for testing - found this - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_inst...o_IDE_drive.php
and if your network/storage controller is not supported there maybe a work around - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3.5/Whitebox..._ESX_3.5_3i.htm - LSI MegaRAID SATA 300-8X now works thanks to that guide.
The big question. 2TB limit. Hear bad things about using Extents. Is there any other way to do it?
EDIT: last week you talked of using a DOM - would a CF to IDE work just as well, or just kill the CF?

Just a suggestion,
Use a Mini-ITX ( cheap as now ) board mounted on the tank - connect via wifi.
will give you more ports ( printer / usb ) / control options.
Cheers.

Started on my cluster - got the idea from the mini-itx one.
Won't be the fastest thing - more to learn / play with.
Will be a 10 way - more if i can get the boards - cost $10 each.
