  1. I have a Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem, I just plug it in and Ubuntu detects it right away. I imagine it would vary for phones though, since many phones require specific drivers often only available for Windows. YMMV.

-nods- I'll have to give it a shot once I get my machine loaded. I think I'm gonna give eeebuntu a shot on an SD card first.

  2. i've had really good luck, been runnig boxee since the closed alpha and had few problems with it crashing (currently on ubuntu 9.04), didn't even do anything fancy to set it up, its worth install just for the pandora and hulu apps

    sudo apt-get install boxee

all i did, well after adding the repo...

Yeah, I did that and it seemed to install fine. But as soon as I start it, I get a seg fault. :(

  3. as i understand it, the netbook remix version is just the desktop version with the netbook remix interface. I've been using UNR version for several weeks and as far as i can tell the netbook remix is no different than the desktop version.

Yes, but there was also a stripped down version that didn't install all the programs that the desktop comes with.

It might have been a variation on easypeasy, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

  4. Previously Fedora 10 on my eee 701 but Ubuntu 9.04 (standard desktop version) currently. Considering switching back to Fedora but I may wait for Fedora 11 first. Both seem to work fine with the 701's hardware though Fedora 10 has bluetooth issues with my USB dongle and Ubuntu works great with my HSDPA dongle (as does Fedora, but it doesn't feel quite as slick when setting it up) so Ubuntu has a slight edge in hardware.

How do you set those up? I'd like to tether my phone in linux the same as I can do in windows currently.

  5. I've just bought a eee 1000he, does the ubuntu 9.04 work, i.e wireless, suspend mode etc?

The netbook remix version seems to. I threw it on an SDHC card, and it booted fairly quickly. Things seemed to run fine, but I don't mess with it a lot. It seemed like it was missing some of the configuration bits, though. For example, I had to make sure the webcam was turned on(in bios or xp) before I could use it in ubuntu. Also, it doesn't seem to have the auto power management, etc.

  6. Just install the official netbook remix and switch the interface to classic by going to the preferences panel.

I guess that would work. But there's a version of the distro out there that doesn't contain the netbook gui at all. I jus' can't seem to find it. I thought it was at the easypeasy link, but it's not.

  7. Well, I found a portable version, and was able to at least get it to run on my netbook. However, I haven't gotten any feedback on the boxee forums. :(

I think I'll probably toss another hard drive in my myth box and try it with that set of hardware. We'll see how that works out.

  8. Anybody else got Boxee up and running? I tried installing it on an old Dell I had sitting around. I got Ubuntu 9.04 running fine, and then installed Boxee. Everything seemed to install fine.

The problem is that when I run Boxee, it pops up with a black screen and then goes back to the desktop with a seg fault. Anybody else seen this? My hardware supports OpenGL, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

  9. So I just picked up an 1000HE recently, and I'm trying to decide what version of linux to put onto it. Now I normally run Mandriva. I've had better luck with them and I'm more familiar with their stuff. However, Ubuntu seems to have better netbook support atm, so I'm debating on going with them.

So what version of linux are you running on your netbook and why?

  10. Okay, I know I didn't imagine this. Ubuntu has a version for netbooks called the Netbook Remix. However, it's like the original Xandros distros, in that it gives you big icons and pushes you towards running one thing at a time.

Now I saw a site that had multiple versions of the netbook remix. One was the regular netbook remix on Ubuntu's site which has just the drivers for the netbooks, etc. Another was the same drivers, etc, but it used the regular desktop instead of the netbook remix one.

However, I can't seem to find this site anymore. Anybody know?

  11. I was just playing it for about an hour now. How do you join a hak5 game? Is there a way to find it listed in the search feature or do you have to use the console and some command to join in somehow?

Also, Has anyone been able to get it to run in VMware?(Im using the lunix live dvd version by the way) I'd like to be able to install it if possible so I can switch back and forth to my desktop, but when I tried to run Warsow in Vmware, I get a frozen, squiggly lined screen. Works ok from a Live-DVD but keeps freezing every so often and I keep getting killed because of the freezing up. I reset my screen to 1024x768 and this aleviated some of the problems, but I think my ATI card isn't easily supported as I had this long disclaimer when first running the disc about loading ATI drivers for my card. Guess I'll have to deal with the graphic lag though, just sux when trying to kill someone and your screen and soundcard freeze for 3-5 seconds at a time.

edit: I think I am going to give the windows version a try as Id much rather play with a joystick than my mouse.

VMWare and 3D graphics don't really play well together.
