  1. You just need to write a bash script that uses ffmpeg to convert the files, I'll leave you the fun of researching and doing it ;)
  2. You could probably just install the program on the U3 drive, making sure that it doesn't save some data in a different folder, like My Documents.
  3. Here are mine, finally applied on my sweet MSI Wind netbook. I've hacked the stickers a bit to achieve maximum awesomeness :D
  4. All I can say is "msi windzor for teh win!!11". I'm also really fond of mine, despite the lack of packet injection (it's a brand new chipset, maybe somebody will come up with something) and having the 3-cell (smaller) battery. In my opinion it looks much more professional than the EEE PC 1000 ;P What I love is the community at http://msiwind.net people there come up with great tips, tutorials and hacks. I'm also thinking about swapping out the wifi card for an atheros one, but that is not a priority for me.
  5. The challenge is cancelled due to LoRD, why would we need any other RPG? ;) But seriously, was it too hard, or is it that nobody cares about this thread anymore?
  6. First of all you should check if your cable is working correctly by shorting the rx and tx pins and opening up hyperterminal. If all is well you should see everything you type printed in the console. I've had no problems with my usb-to-serial cable. Perhaps you should try putty instead of hyperterminal?
  7. Check out this site: http://www.fonerahacks.com It describes all of the hacking methods. I had no problem downgrading the updated fon firmware using the ethernet router trick, and I even bricked it afterwards and had to use the serial cable method :D It's actually very simple to get the cable since most cellphone usb cables are just that - usb-to-serial converters, I've used a Nokia CA-42 cable (people from the USA recommend getting a Kyocera cable, you have to look it up). To use the freifunk utility the fon has to be a bit hacked, that is, with ssh enabled and with a kernel and bootloader patch installed. I recommend getting the serial cable, because it isn't really hard to use (no soldering required) and you don't have to worry about bricking the router.
  8. It seems to me that the simplest answer would be to install wireshark on the compromised PC, I don't think the virus could hide from it. And why can't you just block all of the ports you aren't using? If you insist on sniffing on the network, you could try a man-in-the-middle attack using ettercap. I have only had experience with a 'hacked' WRT54G, but I don't think you can do much without uploading your own firmware, as was already said.
  9. Unfortunately, the fonera requires 5V*2A which is way more than a crappy solar powered lamp can produce.
  10. Guys, I'm terribly sorry for not attending the meetup, I screwed up. *epic shame* :( I can only hope that you will have a great time regardless, and that I will be able to make it up to you next year. Have a beer and hack some box for me, ok?
  11. Of course I mean October! You have a month to do it, and you can always ask for more time. One idea for a very simple game is to make the 'dungeon' a simple grid of rooms about 10x10. Like in MUDs you can only move from room to room, and in a room there can be items, monsters, chests, NPCs etc. You don't have to create your own sophisticated 2d/3d environment engine, and it doesn't have to be a rougelike game (of course I'm not stopping you, but developing ADOM, for example, took quite a long time :P). RogueHart, I suggest that you do it in C++ regardless, after all, the idea behind those challenges is to learn!
  12. Sorry for the delay, guys. Here is the next challenge: Languages: free for all! Time: until 01.10.2008 The challenge: a simple hack n' slash RPG game This one requires an idea and a bit of work instead of some particular knowledge. The goal is to make the simplest and most (re)playable game. No plot (except for a goal of some kind), just a randomly generated dungeon and the player character. Graphics are not required. Bonus points for non-fantasy setting (like cyberpunk, steampunk, post-apocalyptic etc.). That is all, have fun, I hope it's not too easy/hard.
  13. In the Windows version you can run it with the -window parameter to run it in a fully resizable window.
  14. Man, it feels lame to win just like that :P I have to think a bit about the next challenge, but keep your compilers running! :)
  15. The easiest way to convert mods is to use winamp with the disk writer plugin. Here it is: http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/96985 You just have to install it, then go to Preferences > Plug-ins > Output, select it, and configure it (you have to download LAME separately if you want to convert to mp3). Then you just put the mods in your playlist and press play. Remember to select the DirectSound plugin in the options once you're finished or you will be converting everything you try to listen to :P If you want more awesome chip music, check out http://www.chiptune.com To download entire packs of mods go to Chipbench 1.3 > Data > Packs and then select the formats you want.
  16. You just HAD to quote the entire thing? :/ Take look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_(music) Here is the equation I was talking about (under "Labeling pitches").
  17. I assume you are talking about wifi, because I can't imagine an unsupported ethernet card :P Anyway, check out http://aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=compatibility_drivers You only have to find out what chipset your card has. "Supported by aireplay for Linux" means that this chipset supports packet injection.
  18. I think you're better off writing a function that calculates the frequencies :P
  19. Here is my submission - Java tetris. This app was my school project, I've made it two months ago and back then it was only a single player tetris. I had planned to make it multiplayer, but having very little time I had to dump the idea. Fortunately, some of the code was already prepared for two players, so expanding it wasn't very hard. Right now it features both local two player game and network game over IP. The network code is far from being optimal, so I suggest playing over LAN :P Screenshots confirming cross-platform multiplay: Here is the source and the binary in the form of a NetBeans project (the binary is in the /dist folder). JTetris.zip Basic info: Controls for player 1 (on the left) are WSAD for movement, G and J for rotation and H for holding the piece. For player 2 it's arrows and numpad 123. When setting up the network game you don't have to type anything in the address field when hosting. The entire game is probably very buggy, it haven't been tested thoroughly, so I'll be flattered if you actually take time to play it and point out some errors :) As for the code, it is ugly, there are no comments and I had to translate it. :P This was (and still is :P) my very first Java program, and I was actually learning very basic stuff while writing it, so look/learn/copy it at your own risk. Finally, mad props to my friend Gumer for doing the epic pixel art blocks and background. :D
  20. No you don't have to wait for the recovery to end, the folder just has root access, you can easily chmod it while it's running. And photorec does display how many files it has already recovered, and those files are fully recovered, so if you can see only very small files, this could mean that the partitioning went very bad when moving the music files and right now they are in shreds all over the place. :(

    ScanDisk 16G

Calm down, it is impossible to mess up a flash drive. What have you exactly done to it? Try to reformat it, but remember to use FAT 32, not FAT 16.
  22. I use NetBeans for Java [with the official JDK], I haven't used Eclipse, just looked at the GUI and I didn't like it :P For C I use Dev-C++, which is frustrating at times but nice overall. Under linux I use vi and gcc :D
  23. Testdisk has a text user interface, so you don't have to know any commands. If the partition recovery fails you can always use photorec (part of the testdisk package) to recover the mp3s, this is guaranteed to work but you will lose the filenames and it will take a some time.
  24. I'm not gonna let cout win this one so easily. :P I'm also in with Java.
  25. Have you ever tried making maps/skins/models? It's a great way to enter the world of hacking, and you don't have to give up gaming. I know it takes a lot of skill to make a good map, but do it just for fun, even if no one will ever play it. Of course if gaming is really affecting your life, I agree you should take a break.
