Your best bet, before you go too crazy, it to just try it with a couple of routers. Also, calculating your distance to the router gets tricky: The building, what it's made of (and how much of that is between you and any one router), the time of day, the model of access point, all play into how strong the signal is, and how much noise there is. So, with all of those factors, it will be imperfect. And that's OK. Start small, learn, and then grow.
