How's the performance of the PiVPN?  I currently use OpenVPN Access Server as a VM on my NUC and was considering building a PiVPN to have dedicated hardware for it but I'm concerned about the network performance.

I use it to view my cctv while i'm out,and to check on my dog an stuff like that.

Not seen/noticed any issues as of yet, works great with pi-hole installed as well.

Regarding your pi projects. I run a raspberry pi 3 with Ubuntu server installed and an openvpn vanilla server running on that. It's great I had a few issues and a few reinstalls but I'm only new to openvpn. After setting it up 4 time and tinkering I love it, it's brilliant. Runs with no issues and mine has been up in total (between tinckering) for about a week and running for only 2 days now but I haven't had any issues that aren't user error and after correct setup I can't fault it.

I'm also about to start an OwnCloud server build on my second raspberry pi 3 and from what I have read it works great too. The plan it to get the OwnCloud server up and running (and I still have 1 pi left  after that for another project 'need ideas') then cluster then together in a cluster case run ethernet cables to all 3 into a switch and power them from a 5 port high watt usb hub,  strap it all together in a nice package and bolt a cooling fan to it, then sit it next to my router and run 1 ethernet cable and 1 power cable to them and have them run 24/7 just sshing into them if need be. Hope you like the idea, don't thing anyone else will use it though :(

)I actually did use one ofmine on a CCTV setup for my office.  I sit in a remote part of the building(apparently they took my doesn't play well with others Sign seriously) so i put one oup out side my office door and just have a old tablet linked to it to see when some one is going to be disturbing me.

I play with Raspberry Pis even more than myself. Projects I've done / had a go at so far;

  • CCTV Camera
  • In-car media system
  • Home automation with OpenHAB
  • Kodi box for TV
  • On-the-go pentesting box
  • On-top-of-the-shed weather station (thermometer, wind gauge, precipitation)
  • TOR WiFi Router
  • Voice recognition for any of the above, using PocketSphinx

You say the most inappropriate things...

I have a Pi at home running a weather station - however it is mainly used to check the Earth's magnetic field (looking for auroras).
Using it as a Kodi box is also an obvious choice :P
Cheaper than buying an AppleTV or Boxee (although Boxee is the next choice).

Have a Pi Zero W here and want to create excatly the same in combination with the Pineapple Nano. The Nano has not enough CPU/RAM so i want to use bettercap on the Pi Zero W. Still searching for the best way to connect it to the pineapple (WiFi, usb2eth to pineapple or usb2eth to rpi). The nano is so unstable that i only use it to collect the clients.

Some hint for this Project ?

Well with all the time it took to setup and hardly working it wasnt worth the time with the zero and while i could connect it to the Pineapple, So far not able to run clients on the pineapple through the pi back to the internet and with further testing, bettercap installed on the zero but would not start for some reason. Ive scrapped this and am using the BashBunny now.

None of mine are remotely amazing, but they are useful.

Got my daughter a pi3 and am teaching her what makes a computer works, basic coding etc. She asked for it for her birthday.

My own pi3, I have with multiple SD cards, retro gaming, up to PSX era, and also as a "Show to schools" when I work with them about how we can move away from standard machines, save money, and every kid can have one.

And messing with Alexa.

And i got the HASS ( Home Assistant: https://home-assistant.io/ ) you can make you'r own "Smart" Home with it.
And the really have many compatible devices , Many devices are connectable with it take a look here ( https://home-assistant.io/components/#search/ )
For now i got 1 Pi3 left and 1 PiZero . One Zero i connected with the Home-Assistant and that measures now my room Temp and moving detection, ect.

The Pi-Hole thing looks interesting - a home Ad Blocker, however it puts me off that it's basically just a DNS server...Cheaper (free) way to do that kind of ad-blocking is just to add a bunch of entries in your hosts file..

Well, Yes.

But this way there is no need to do it for all my devices.
My phone, Tablet, Laptop, Smart-TV ect are all Add Free this way.
And otherwise i need to adjust my host file for each device.  Now i just connector to my network and add are gone
