Hi everyone,

Is anyone else experiencing a rebooting Tetra? I've tried powering my via my computer USB ports and via the twin Pineapple 15000 Juice packs she get up and running and then as soon as I the PineAP Daemon to enabled it reboots every time no matter which powering method is use.

Any help would be welcome.

Regards.

I haven't experienced this, I've had it running consecutively with PineAP running for over 10 hours inside of the EDC bag on two separate occasions.

Not sure what would cause it in your situation or how to further diagnose, just wanted to point out I have had it working for prolonged periods of time. Possibly may suggest having it powered via both methods at once, so have one y-cable connected to two of your usb ports and the other y-cable connected to your two pineapple 15000 and see if you get the same results.

Hi Bored369,

Thanks for the advice, so I plugged the other Y cable I received into both Pineapple Juice 15000 batteries one end of each of the Y cable USB connectors into each battery so both batteris are used to supply power and into the two USB 3 ports on my PC to power the Tetra and both times a soon as I start the PineAP Daemon after about 15 seconds the Tetra reboots.

I've also contacted Hak5 returns for advice as I don't think this is little Tetra is operating as intended. I've only had it running for a few hours in total.

hmm. this does seem psu related. are your PC ports usb 3.0?

Also, go grab a 12v/2a charger from your local computer store. That should get you up and going immediately. I use that + my usb cable over eth... I noticed that using two usb ports only gave me 5v/1a max! So be careful that you arent underpowering this thing. It can and will hurt it!

Hi InfiniteDevelopment,

Thanks for your help, yes the PC USB ports are USB 3 and I agree that they might not be supplying enough power but I have the exact same result when using the Pineapple Juice 15000 battery packs I purchased with my new Tetra. I'm not very happy as I intended to use the purchased Pineapple Juice 15000 battery packs for remote deployments with the Tetra but even using both battery packs as prescribed the Tetra still reboots when I enable the PineAP Daemon! The reboot occurs from both power configurations, I've tried using different USB cables and power supplies, PC and Pineapple Juice 15000 I'm starting to suspect the Tetra is a faulty unit.

As I'm in Australia I'll try your suggestion for a charger 12v/2a and repost the results here.

As mentioned I've emailed Hak5 about thi issue but no reply as yet.

Regards.

Did you email shop@hak5.org ? You should receive a reply in 1-2 business days. I also concur that it sounds like a power issue. Do you have it in this configuration?

If it's still happening with 18+ watts (either 2x Pineapple Juice or a 12V/2A adapter) I'll start suspecting software.

Can you post the output of the serial console from the moment it reboots?

Hi Darren,

Thanks for stopping by and posting that photo of the battery configuration. I believe its another noob error on my part as I didn't have the Tetra configured with the batteries like your photo so I'll retest with this correct configuration. I suspect I've been underpower the Tetra and when I ask the Tetra to power on the PineAP Daemon she is not receiving enough power to keep the WiFi antennas powered up as well as the Tetra.

I'll retest again with your config and post the outcome here which I'm sure will be positive.

Thanks again for your time.

Regards.

John

Can you post the output of the serial console from the moment it reboots?

It may be something with software, can you give a couple steps on getting the serial output?

I was going to report back in this thread: https://forums.hak5.org/index.php?/topic/37670-stability-issues-with-red-is-wlan1mon-when-being-disabled-and-tethering-stopping/

but when I got home from Deadpool (highly recommend btw) the Tetra was restarting, I got a video of it restarting twice in 3 minutes (working on uploading to youtube and i'll post a link here)

I should have 2x2.1a + 1x1a with the two pineapple 15000 i have and the configuration of cables i was using. It appeared to restart as soon as I tried connecting to the management ap after I saw pineAP start flashing the red light consistently, but it may just have been coincidence.

I know there's a way to do this with screen, but I'm a minicom man myself so I'll give you setup instructions for that:

Connect cable from PC to TETRA USB UART port

sudo apt-get install mincom

sudo minicom -s

Go to Serial Port setup the make sure it's set to /dev/ttyUSB0 as the device, 115200 as the speed, and 81N as in 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity bit. Then save as default and either exit setup and re-issue sudo minicom without the -s, or select exit which'll drop you into the terminal. Press enter to activate -- you'll be prompted to login.

If you run this while booting you'll can watch the kernel come to life. Keep this open and log what happens when there's an issue.

Lemme tell you - having super convenient serial access in dev has been a boon. I highly recommend it.

BTW you can do the same in Windows with PuTTY and I'm sure there's something out there for mac.

I'll let the next guy school me on how screen > minicom later ;-)

well I had to go with screen as mincom isn't available on kali for rasPi2

ended up just being:

script logTetra.txt

screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 8N1

So I tried to catch it on a reboot and stop it at a another reboot.

I have PineAP set to autostart all options. No other modules set to autostart.

Pineapple 15000 both ports connected to y-cable and then to the eth micro usb port

standard micro-usb cable from UART micro usb port to rasPi2 usb

Tried testing with the Anker PowerCore 20100 replacing the Pineapple 15000 for both the y-cable ports (each port getting 2.4a), same UART to rasPi2 otherwise.

It appeared to stay on and not reboot automatically after starting PineAP red light flashing.

So I connected to the management AP and tried doing a recon scan for 1 minute. This caused a reboot after this message was displayed about 50 % through the scan (also the red light went solid for a moment then the tetra rebooted)

That's pretty much all greek to me, but appreciate learning how to get to the serial console!

Hope that helps track something down.

I should have a second y-cable tomorrow then I can try hooking up even more juice to it while it's connected to the rasPi2 and do some more testing if that would help any.

Let me know if there is any other testing I can do.

We need to mainly be testing it with just the 2 pineapple 15000 batteries as the set comes. No use to add extra battery if we notice it's being unstable ;) with the provided items

I know I was just testing the outcome with additional power added to the mix :) There was a change, so it may prove helpful.

Please use spoiler tags for your logs ^_^

which button is that or how would on go about that? I'm not very forum savvy.

Also noticed I was still on 1.0.1 firmware, just updated to 1.0.2 and with the anker battery pack setup (2.4a to each y-cable and rasPi2 usb port on standard cable) didn't see the power loss issue, with recon or anything else I tried.

Using 1.0.2 with Pineapple 15000 on the each of the y-cable (so 1a and 2.1a) and rasPi2 usb port, it still does the rebooting as soon as pineap seems to start up.

using 1.0.2 with two pineapple 15000 on each of the y-cable (so 2.1a and 2.1a) and rasPi2 usb port, it does not do the rebooting even with recon and anything else i tried.

now if only we can find out why loss of power using two pineapple batteries when under load aka just using pineap :) is there like a rest state on the batteries itself that it will just go into sleep.i did notice one battery where the orange leds would just turn off

That's exactly what happens to me. One of the batteries just turns off when I try to recon.

What does this mean on the logs: Warning - bad CRC, using default environment

Now starting pci_init process

pci_init_board: PCIe PLL not set for 40MHz refclk

BOARD IS NOT CALIBRATED!!!

pci_init finished

While I can't tell you why its there, I've been told its normal and nothing to worry about

So I got the 2amp 12v adapter today and had no issues with using that, worked for a few hours doing recon scans every now and then. Also got my second y-cable and I have four batteries hooked up to it (I want the longest runtime I can get) and everything seems to be working great with that so far.

I figured it was power related! :)
