Tetra & Nano Cable/Battery Questions

DigitalData

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I didn't have time the past two days to trawl through previous posts and just scanned thread names for anything similar. Found one today though.

So just for anyone elses sake who asks this question, this thread has the answer: https://forums.hak5.org/index.php?/topic/37663-pineapple-tetra-reboots-after-a-few-minutes/

Two battery packs, two Y Cable, put both ends of the splitter into the juice packs and connect to ETH and UART.

Thanks everyone :)

I've been trying to figure out my tetra power issues for a while now.

When i plug it in to AC power it works fine. When i use it on battery, it reboots on me whenever I enable PineAP and check the options "Allow Associations", "Beacon Response" and Capture SSIDs to Pool".

I've tried every configuration I can think of with the 2 Pineapple Juice 15000's. I've even swapped each one that came with the tetra with the one from my Hak5 Field Kit thinking maybe one of the 2 was bad.

I have even configured them the was Darren shows in the photo in this post.

Is anyone else still having this issue?

Hey! as some of you know, the TETRA no longer comes with batteries. I'm trying to find a set on Amazon that I could use to power this bad boy... Just wanted to hear some options and see what others thought would be a good option.

I found this one below, was thinking of getting 2 of them (note there are 2 options, I was looking at 2x 15,000 unit)

I've used my tetra with two of each of these (separately and in conjunction):

http://www.amazon.com/Powerful-10000mAh-Anker-PowerCore-Technology/dp/B013HSQXZC

http://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Portable-Recharges-Panasonic/dp/B013HSWY5K

Having them combined just gives you more time to use them, all 3 including the one previously linked work really well and I have all of them. They put out about 3/4 amps each and having two of them will provide you with enough amps to power the tetra fully, the mah size just gives you a longer length of time usage wise if you add more to it.

Currently my favorite setup is the 26800 + 13400 and then the two pineapple 1500s I have, with that setup (each battery pack getting one of the y-cable plugs) i get about 26/30 hours of continuous usage running pineAP and a few modules intermittently and having anywhere from 8-30 clients connected at a time.

I'd recommend the anker ones because they are the most likely to have the closes to advertised mah (generally 80-90%) where cheaper battery packs you can get anywhere from only 20-40% advertised capacity actually. I have tested a lot of battery packs to get to that conclusion.

I just bought this beast: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016DA61V2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a little pricey but it has a max output of over 4.8A. It amounts to a 24W output. Great thing is it maintains Tetra stability by itself with no additional batteries needed.

Also, if your Tetra didn't come with an ac adapter, there is a good one here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DKSI0S8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has a 3A output at 12V, so it's good for 36W and it's cheap ($9). I'm also looking at another alternative that I think will be more helpful, but I'm still hashing it out.

I just thought i'd share my experiences with battery packs.

Interesting issue where I am using two 50000mah 2.1A from one Y cable into UART boots the Pineapple OK, but then when trying to scan it reboots the Pineapple.

However....

When I do the same thing into ETH the device happily work perfectly, uptime so far of over 2hrs while using Site Survey , capturing and deauth with no issues.

Is this expected behaviour of UART vs ETH?

Forgot to post this here (actually been busy pentesting with the Pineapple :) )

So it turned out, in my case, that one of the Juice packs was faulty. Essentially, you'd plug them both into the TETRA (one to ETH one to UART). One would turn on automatically. The second however would not (normal). So when the second is turned on, after a few seconds it would turn itself off. As such, not enough power was being supplied to boot the Pineapple.

I tried some troubleshooting. I swapped the batteries, the Y cables, the ports. Same result. The one Juice pack would always turn off.

Contacted the HakShop and got a new one sent out. Not having the same problem with the new one and it stays on. It doesn't turn on automatically, I still have to turn the second one on, but once it is turned on, it stays on and enough power is supplied to boot.

Now my TETRA is tactical as it was meant to be! :P

So if anyone has a similar problem, do the same as me and confirm if it's not a faulty battery :)

I use two TOMO power banks which using Li-Ion batt. I use old laptop batteries for that . And you can change this battery without shut down the unit.

Each power bank capable to provide up to 3 amp. Plus it has fancy screen which provide you with information about amperage right now. :))))

Using the above linked power banks as examples, is there any reason to use 2 over 1 OTHER than length of time ?

Seems like everyone is using 2 power banks, and I'm curious if it's just so that the tetra can last longer or is it that one bank can't provide enough juice continually.

Thanks!

One bank (usually) can't provide enough power to run the Tetra under full load.

Any luck with the RAVPower?

I am ordering the Anker PowerCore 20100 with 5v 2.8a over 2 output. I will try with one to see if that works, then if it doesn't I will order a second one. I will order a second one eventually anyway, but it will be good to know if it works with just one.

Ordered 2 of these and tested with 10 min scans at least once an hr and also had 2 tablets 1 phone and laptop connected to the OpenAP and ran tcpdump, DWall, and Collected SSID with PineAP.  Had the tetra connect to my wifi with an alfa awus036neh.  I stopped at 38hrs with one battery at the end of its last bar and other with 2 bars left so It could have gone longer just didn't see the need to.

I was wondering: If I buy the Tetra I will buy from the edutech hack shop. The official reseller. But the power adapter that comes with it: are there EU adapters in the box or do I need to supply my own? So that the adapter will fit in a Dutch wall socket.

I see this may be a subject for ppl trying to decide between devices or actually looking to use the TETRA as a walk and exploit solution. I'm reviewing everything, in any case it's been difficult for the average noob to find an answer to this except for the company response of two 15000 juice packs, and anything else from a beginner stand point to find a better third party solution was a post in 2016 that mentioned  Intocircuit 26000mAh High Capacity Power Castle Portable Charger External Battery Pack. From rudimentary forum searches as the best. Let's delve a bit DEEPER; and here from ppl who are up to date on there tech, regarding optimal power solutions for on the go TETRA!
