Primz Posted May 24, 2015 Share Posted May 24, 2015 Hey everyone, was at a friends house last night (the friend who directed me to Hak5) and he had a few friends there also Hak5 fans. So in short there was 5 Hak5 fans/forumers under one roof with a few beers and some funny smelling cigarettes all discussing Hak5 topics, vids projects and of course the wifi pineapple and rubber ducky. And the then this topic was brought up. In a matter of let's say a hour there was a small handful of Hak5'ers together discussing all sorts and it got me and my mate thinking maybe Hak5 should have some quarterly meet ups I understand Darren and Seb are extremely busy but let's say there is someone who is trustworthy in the uk who understand Hak5s values and knows somewhat the community, it could be scheduled at a pub/bar or coffee shop or something to that nature to discus all topis Hak5 related and to get the community together and to grow ideas. As this can be every quarterly then maybe Darren or seb can pop their heads in once a year or twice a year say hello to the fans and community and as I'm only speak from UK terms, but this can also be done world wide. Even put up a camera so the Hak5 team can watch from their sunny office or other community's in other country's can have a peek through the looking glass. Anyways this is just a thought but when discussed last night it got quite a positive hype so Generaly just wanted to see what other think. And let's be honest you put a group of hackers together in a room; good things will happen. And it wouldn't cost anything except people's time and will only help the community grow and save the Hak5 team a lot of headache I'm sure :) Any thoughts anyone? Nobody from the Hak5 team came, but Derek from PoorBoys (now defunct) was there as well as a number of forum regulars. I think we had 10-15 people total having fun and staying in a downright fairly crummy Hostel. I'd go again if another would be organized. Alternatively, there are quite a number of hacker cons throughout the year. You could just plan a meet-up with fellow Hak5-ers at that con. I'll be attending Steelcon over in Sheffield this july. DigiNinja is organizing the con so that's 2 already. And if for some reason you don't like the people - it's a con so there's talks to attend, locks to pick and other people to interact with of whom you know they're likely to be of a similar mindset. cooper Posted May 26, 2015 Share Posted May 26, 2015 Nice! I wondered where those pics went. There was supposed to be a group photo aswell I think but nowadays I'm not so sure anymore. In pic #5 (so 6th in the set) the people are, from left to right: Cooper, Moonlit (former forum admin), Metatron, DigiNinja, (can't recall), Derek (host of PoorBoys) Those are all the people from then who I can identify. I recall that young kid, second from the left in pic #2 as being friendly and impressively sharp, but sadly no name that stuck with me. I basically look the same as I did in 2006 (pic 6 next to Cooper), just with a shaved head and a beard. Plus a little older so a little worse for wear but other than that... I'm volunteering at SteelCon so I'll probably be wearing one of those green shirts plus I don't think a lot of foreigners will show up so look for the guy that's having some slight problems with his grammar. My plan is to arrive on either wednesday or thursday and to hop back to the other side of the pond on the tuesday or wednesday after. As per DigiNinja's suggestion I'm going to check out Bletchley Park on one of those days. Still need to sort out my hotel or B&B, but not expecting problems there. I think it's completely possible to live with nothing but a Android tablet and a dedicated server somewhere in the world, but sure its nice to have a laptop to hand. I'll be bringing toys for sure, but not coming too heavy. Once the schedule is put up and any comps, I'll think about what I'll need, guessing I'm not going to need a bench spectrum analyzer or full electronics lab set up for reverse engineering, so probably my Thinkpad, phone and myself. I'm sure I'll be learning a lot, as I've not really kept too much up to speed with computer security, much outside the big things. I code and work on hardware projects, security is a secondary thought in those cases. metatron Posted May 27, 2015 Share Posted May 27, 2015 I'd imagine running a pineapple at a security conference, even with current firmware is a fine way of getting it bricked. Like taking a laptop, you kill the WiFi and go over 4G or kill the WiFi and go via a USB card from a VM, then wipe the VM and probably the base OS when you get home, but that really depends on the people there. Its just regular TV delivered by a different medium and unboxings/let's play/ and my life style shows about makeup and such. They're using the Hakshop to recoup some of the costs and I'm sure the warehouse didn't come cheap either (not even counting the ridiculously high price for internet to the premises). It's also why they're trying to get people to support them via Patreon. They'd prefer to just do their thing without having to say "Oh, we like [bRAND] for [something hopefully relevant to you]." every 10 seconds during their shows, but bottom line is they too need to eat on a daily basis... I know when Hak5 started a few of them were making a living doing sysadmining and such, but I figured at this point, between the shop, which I'm sure everything has a huge markup on and YouTube money, which I have no idea how the rev3/hak5 share goes, they would be making an okay living. Hell, people make a good living off youtube, just doing unboxing videos. With all the "hacker" films and TV shows that have come out the last few years and are coming out, I'd imagine there viewing figures are doing well. cooper Posted June 1, 2015 Share Posted June 1, 2015 During the HitB con last week we celebrated R0n1n's birthday which is now for the 3rd time in a row and his wife already said she wasn't going to accept it for next year (conclusion: she's going to be a volunteer next year aswell).
