Pineapple DHCP question

If I connect my MKV to my PC via Ethernet and tell my NIC to get an IP address automatically from the MKV, the MKV has no internet connectivity. However, if I specifically give an IP address to the NIC (172.16.42.42) the MKV has internet? Is this intentional?

Cheers

Hi Technolust,

Well, I have been given an IP address from the MKV over Ethernet proving that DHCP works, which is probably a given. But still doesn't explain why I need to statically set an IP address to my NIC for the MKV to get internet access.

I stand corrected on the DHCP over eth0 but to answer your question........

Your laptop Ethernet is getting DHCP info from the MarkV. The GW it gets via DHCP is 172.16.42.1, which is back to the MarkV rather then out to your laptop wifi connection.

More importantly, when the MarkV is tethered to a PC, it will use 172.16.42.42 as its GW.

That's the way it's supposed to work. The pineapple's gateway is 42.42 . If you read the faq you would have seen this.

Thanks Technolust..... I understand now. I assumed that 172.16.42.1 was the GW. Well it is normally defaulted on routers with a .1 on the end. Much clearer now.

Yea, that can throw people for a loop. I've actually run into production environments where the gateway is in the middle of the range. No clue why, that's the way it was when I got there. I've also seen a lot of them at 254.

I also have seen a few ending .254, but never middle of the range, and your right If I had read the handbook I would have known this!?? AAgghhhhh.......

But I have one last question with this... Promise.....

If a standard router has been set a static LAN IP address, isn't tis also the GW address?? But on the Pineapple it clearly has 2 separate address, an IP for itself and an IP for the GW. Looking at the 'Network info' infusion, I'm guessing this has something to do with br-lan??

Please could you explain this?

I can explain this and hopefully clear some of the confusion.

The WiFi Pineapple has the IP address of 172.16.42.1. Any client connected to the WiFi Pineapple will use that IP as their gateway. That's how they end up getting internet through the Pineapple.

The WiFi Pineapple's gateway is set to 172.16.42.42 by default. That means that it looks for a machine on the network with that IP address and will use that as it's gateway. Note that if everyone on the network set .42 as their gateway, you would not be going through the Pineapple.

The Pineapple itself does not have two IP addresses at all.

Sebkinne

An exception to the 172.16.42.42 default gateway rule is when you connect wlan1 in client mode to a WiFi Access point to reach the internet.

The WiFi Pineapple will use IP settings obtained from the DHCP server on the Wifi Access Point and the default gateway will point there instead of 172.16.42.42.

You can see this in the Network tile.

Absolutely. This is only when using ICS via ethernet from anoter machine.
