prerequisites for being called a hacker. wifi drone side note

To be a hacker you have to want to figure things out and learn how things work. This desire is what makes us who we are. Just because we want to learn all we can about WIFI I dont see problems with this. I see problems when manufactuers cover things up. If people like us dont discover these flaws who will. The crap about the drone thing is to scare people about wifi. A side note port scans are legal as far as college professors have told me. I bet the drone is doing a scan in monitor mode or it is connected to an open wifi network. The cnn drone thing was about open networks I think. Wifi networks are not switched they are shared. Like an ethernet hub. I bet this is how an ftp password got sniffed for a box store. It is hard to sniff things on a switched network unless you are sniffing on that pc. This is how a one to one relationship of a switch is. A hub is one to many.

Wifi is a shared media there is no such thing as a network switch for WIFI.

As far as being called a hacker goes, just be you. Don't identify yourself with a label as others can and will use that label to mean whatever they want it to. Eventually, the alternate or expanded upon meaning will stick and suddenly when you claim to be something it'll be interpreted as the alternate and you end up being an outcast again.

Just be you. It's a lot easier to remain that way and since there's only one you, nobody can redefine you. They might label you (compartmentalize you within their own frame of reference) to which you can respond by asking them their definition of that label. Say to what extent it fits and let them worry about where to put you in their mental framework. Not your problem.

The CNN drone thing. Meh. For a press piece it's surprisingly accurate. What's more concerning to me was when it was uncovered that shops use triangulation with your phone to see where in the shop you spent the most of your time, if you came back more often and, since the range of the tech wasn't limited by the storefront when and how often you walked by. That's a bit too big brother for my liking...

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner. It's more about rigging stuff to work or modifying stuff then it is about getting into someone's bank account or web site. You can be a "Hacker" and never touch a computer. Anyone who's dropped a V8 into a Chevy S-10 is a "Hacker" or someone who's had to make a part for something to get it working is a "Hacker". I've been a Hacker all of my life but I've just started messing with computers over the last year or two. Still can't use any of the tools in Kali, not even WireShark but I do have fun with SDR.

Really, how about WPA2 Enterprise with Radius, each user get a unique password so they are individually encrypted, then high end AP allow client isolation which tunnel their connection individually to the internet so they cant talk to each other...

But when you consider just the psysical medium, it's a hub - anybody can listen in on the traffic. Think OSI layers and such. If it were a switch the encrypted data would never be sent to me in the first place.

You are right, at layer 1 all wireless communication share the same medium which it the RF spectrum.
