XPe - VMware ESX

Plunks

Recommended Posts

This issue has been doing my head in for a couple of days, was hoping someone would be able to shed some light on the issue.

The company I work for do standalone kiosks for EFT purchases. These machines run XPe off an industrial 2GB FC. Whenever these machines need replacement cards for whatever reason the OS has to be loaded from an image and then manually configured on a display model machine. This is pulling support team members off the desk for sometime to configure these machines.

I have been provided the terrible task of trying to streamline this a bit. The only viable solution I can come up with is hooking the flashcard up to the card reader on the support members machine and booting off it within the ESX to configure it at their desks. Booting off the card however just leads to BSODs galore, from copious amounts of googling I can only find options of running an XP OS and then tearing it down onto a separate partition and booting that as XPe.

This isn't really what they are after because each card needs to be different.

Any light someone can shed on this would be great

Have you tried something like clonezilla or linux dd command to copy bit for bit images from card to card, and then use the windows sid tool to create new sids for each XP install, so the sids coming back to the main domain, aren't all the same? I forget the same of the sids tool, but if I recall, norton ghost has it built in to clone, but create a new windows sid so you don't end up with two of the same sids on more than one install for the domain.

Pretty sure this will do it as well, although not officially supported, they want you to use sysprep, cloning is much faster, just doesn't change the sid, so if you have an AD domain, AD will reject both machines when cloned if they are both on the network domain with the same sid. - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897418.aspx

NewSID was retired a while ago because SID issues were deemed a myth so you can't download it anymore (although just realised you haven't actually said use it). Mark has a good blog on the subject

Having said that, NewSID still seemingly appeared to fix some issues we had at my old place. Still available to download at my site if you wish

According to Mark having two SIDs on the network is fine and won't cause an issue and AD won't reject them.

We ran into this with Server 2003 for domain controllers in the past, but may not make a hill of beans difference for something like say, XP, since when you join to the domain, the local admin account sid is different than the one stored from the profile via Active Directory. It might not effect the OS's but I do recall having issues with it on domain controllers when trying to clone them and when they would try to migrate to a backup server, it for some reason ban the sid and created issues. Maybe that doesn't exist with Win7 and Server 2008+, not sure. I would imaging embedded devices are all probably clones anyway which they did at the bank I worked at for ATM machines, but pretty sure they still used the NewSid tool or Norton Ghosts sid tool when doing so. Wasn't aware it was no longer an issues, good to know.
