Hello,

From my experience i have learned a lesson, if you use virtualbox even the latest 4.2.4 will fail when you try to plug in USB, because virtual box does not support USB.3.0 ports, i tried to install & uninstall all versions of VB nearly for 8 hours.on my Dell XPS 15 sandy Bridge that comes with two 3.0 USB ports, every time i plug usb it gives error & even wifi alfa usb wont work. in vmware workstation 8 there is not even a single error with usb or watever.i think virtual box should update their stuff. if you have any suggestions or opinions plz share with me.

Regards

Skorpinok.

Check your bios, see if there is a setting for what USB speed is set to, if it allows all, or only USB 3. Its supposed to be backwards compatible, but I know on my own machine, in my bios, I have the option to set them to 1.1, 2.0, or auto for both.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a thinkpad edge laptop with 1 usb 3.0 and I wasn't having any issues with virtual box, until a Windows update... The alfa card that I had plugged into the usb 3.0 would randomly disconnect. After a couple of Windows updates later, it's more stable.

Not sure what is different but my USB3 port seems to work with Virtualbox - running on Ubuntu 12.10.

I think it works, because of backwards compatibility.
