Alternative routers to fon+

Heya,

Just wondering if anyone had used any other type of router for the interceptor project instead of a fon+

For example I had an idea to use a an old wrt54g.

I know that there are many different firmwares out there particularly ones that enable a "twin" antenna'd wrt to be split into two different wireless networks.

Ideally i guess one for snooping on network traffic, the other for regular wireless access.

ANy merit in this idea?

I just tried installing on an wrt54G and everything worked until the install of Interceptor but that failed.

Says: *Packages were found but none compatible with the architectures configured

Maybe some help from digininja? ;)

It uses a Broadcom chip maybe that's the problem. But there should be a simple sollution

The problem is that when a package is created you have to specify what chipset it is designed for, the Interceptor .pkg file is marked as for MIPs. The only file in there that is specifically MIPs is DaemonLogger as that is compiled, everything else is scripts.

I'll try to find my Makefile for DaemonLogger and see if I can put together a Broadcom version.

On the side, having two antennas doesn't make a difference. All WRTs I've seen only have a single wireless card so can only operate a single interface at a time. With the Atheros chipset you can have multiple interfaces but only one actually does anything at any one point. Broadcom will be similar.

I don't know what processor the WRTs use so you may have to recompile daemonlogger but the rest of the Interceptor should work fine because it is just scripts on top of standard OpenWRT packages.

I've found a replacement for the fon+! I did some looking around on Acctons site and found the MR3202A and I contacted them about it. The SMCWBR11-G is the same router as the MR3202A, the only problem I've found is purchasing one. I can't seem to find one in the US or on a store that will ship to the US. I'll post back if I find something.

Well I still can't find the SMC WBR11-G anywhere in the US but I did find another router that is made by Accton called the Alfa AP51. I think this might be a suitable replacement for the fon+ but I'm not honestly sure. I'm going to be contacting Accton and Alfa a little later on tonight. Everybody keep your fingers crossed.

That Alfa and the above only have 1 RJ45 port. I haven't found a fon+ replacement yet.

Beakmyn thanks but I already own an OpenMesh, a fon 2100, and I know about the Accton MR3202A thats the one I've been looking for. Also the Alfa AP51 has two ports, its just not written very clearly.

Do you have any idea if this non descript WR5204 thing will work? It looks like it is made by abocom.

It looks like it supports some nice specifications, but I can't find out what hardware it is really using.

I just got an email back from abocom, they said this model is using Ralink chipset model #RT3050.
