  1. Hi All, I know this has probably been mentioned on the internet countless times, but I can't seem to get my AWUS036NEH adapter working with Kali Rolling. I've been at this for days and just can't get my head around it. I'm running Linux kali 4.9.0-kali4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.30-1kali1 (2017-06-06) x86_64 GNU/Linux. I've trawled through forums here and other places and tried various set ups to get this working with no luck, so hopefully someone here can help me out. Issue: Getting AWUS036NEH adapter to work with Kali Rolling. I can get the device on the system, but I am unable to scan APS (airodump wlan0mon). Although, after trying numerous times to get the adapter working, and keep a log of each step, airodump did work randomly once. (The steps I did will be displayed below) Setup: Kali is running on Virtualbox VM 5.1.24 Tested the following: Plugged in adapter, selected the USB device to be recognized by Virtual BOX and ran lsusb and can see the device. Please see below for what I did and got it working, but does not work anymore when I try again. This tells me, that the adapter intermittently works, but am I not understanding or missing something to get it working consistently? I have each time ran airmon-ng check kill, on each attempt to get it working. (I've set up the adapter on my MAC OS and it works perfectly fine) But as mentioned, I can't get it to work anymore, can anyone put me in the right direction or help me out? Thanks
  2. Hi, I'm trying to set up a wifi access point using an Alfa AWUS036AC Wireless Adapter. My hostapd.conf file is below. I am having three problems with the access point, and I believe they may be related. Any help is appreciated. The three problems: 1. Network capture shuts down in the middle. Error: "network adapter on which the capture was being done is no longer running; the capture has stopped" 2. "Incorrect Password" error when the password is correct 3. Once connected to Mywifi, there is no internet available. Hostapd.conf: #hostapd.conf interface=wlan0 driver=nl80211 ssid=Mywifi channel=1 macaddr_acl=0 accept_mac_file=./allowed_macs logger_syslog=-1 logger_syslog_level=2 wpa=2 wpa_passphrase=password1 wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK wpa_pairwise=CCMP rsn_pairwise=CCMP
  3. Has anyone gotten a Samsung Chromebook 3, with crouton installing Kali or Ubuntu, to recognize an external wifi adapter? I keep doing searches and come up with posts from 2014 and 2015 saying that the Chromebook is not capable of recognizing external wifi adapters. Specifically I have an Alfa AWUS036NHA i'd like to use. If i can't resolve this by Nov 1 (2018) i'm just going to buy a "traditional" Win10 PC with a non-eMMC spinning 500GB drive. I've had no problem making those dual-boot. There is so much negative information about (1) making machines with eMMC (SSHD) dual boot or booting up off USB, and (2) Chromebooks not recognizing external wifi adapters. Maybe i need to wait 2-3 yrs for Chromebooks to become more versatile? ... Thanks for comments.
  4. I want to buy Wireless Adapter but I'm confused .I do not know which model is better . My available Wireless Adapter list for buying AWUS051nh v2 AWUS036nhr v2 AWUS052nh AWUS036AC AWUS036ACH plz Guide me...
  5. Hi all, I'm a newbie to Hak5 Forums, so if this thread is in the wrong category, it would be great if the admins could move it to the correct category. Most of you are probably using 'BO' as the region for 'iw' on Linux. This allows the WiFi interface to operate at 30dBm (1 Watt) at max. However, if you're like me and have a device that is capable of transmitting over 1W (I have Alpha Network AWUS036NH - 2W), you might be interested in increasing the TX power beyond 30dBm. By default, selecting 'BO' as the region only allows the device to operate at a maximum of 30dBm. I tested this on my Raspberry Pi 3, Model B running Kali Linux (with the kali-linux-full metapackage). *** If you are lazy and don't want to follow these manual steps below, I made two bash scripts that will work on Kali Linux and Ubuntu : https://github.com/hiruna/wifi-txpower-unlocker Working directory: /root Steps: 1. Update and upgrade apt-get update apt-get upgrade 2. Install dependencies to compile apt-get install pkg-config libnl-3-dev libgcrypt11-dev libnl-genl-3-dev build-essential 3. Download the latest Central Regulatory Domain Agent (CRDA) and Wireless Regulatory Database I downloaded crda-3.18.tar.xz and wireless-regdb-2017.03.07.tar.xz wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/software/network/crda/crda-3.18.tar.xz wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/software/network/wireless-regdb/wireless-regdb-2017.03.07.tar.xz 4. Unzip the downloaded files tar xvJf crda-3.18.tar.xz tar xvJf wireless-regdb-2017.03.07.tar.xz 5. Navigate into wireless-regdb-2017.03.07 cd wireless-regdb-2017.03.07 6. Open db.txt and locate the region BO section nano db.txt You will see something like this: country BO: DFS-JP (2402 - 2482 @ 40), (30) (5250 - 5330 @ 80), (30), DFS (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (30) The number in the second set of brackets (for each frequency) is the txpower. Since I'm using the 2.4Ghz and want a txpower of 2W (~33dBm), I changed the 20 to 33, and saved the file: country BO: DFS-JP (2402 - 2482 @ 40), (33) (5250 - 5330 @ 80), (30), DFS (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (30) I also noticed that region AU allows 36dBm for 2.4Ghz, so you could just continue without modifying the region BO: country AU: DFS-ETSI (2400 - 2483.5 @ 40), (36) (5150 - 5250 @ 80), (23), NO-OUTDOOR, AUTO-BW (5250 - 5350 @ 80), (20), NO-OUTDOOR, AUTO-BW, DFS (5470 - 5600 @ 80), (27), DFS (5650 - 5730 @ 80), (27), DFS (5730 - 5850 @ 80), (36) (57000 - 66000 @ 2160), (43), NO-OUTDOOR However, I checked with Kali Linux (without compiling and changing the regulatory.bin) and it showed that max txpower was only 20dBm: country AU: DFS-ETSI (2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20), (N/A) (5170 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 17), (N/A), AUTO-BW (5250 - 5330 @ 80), (N/A, 24), (0 ms), DFS, AUTO-BW (5490 - 5710 @ 160), (N/A, 24), (0 ms), DFS (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A) So I'm assuming Kali Linux is using an old regulatory.bin and legislation in AU has changed. 7. Compile make 8. Backup up your old regulatory.bin file and move the new file into /lib/crda mv /lib/crda/regulatory.bin /lib/crda/regulatory.bin.old mv regulatory.bin /lib/crda As mentioned in https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/developers/regulatory/crda and https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/developers/regulatory/wireless-regdb, we need to include RSA public keys in crda-3.18/pubkeys. I noticed that there are already 2 .pem files in crda-3.18/pubkeys: sforshee.key.pub.pem linville.key.pub.pem 9. Copy root.key.pub.pem into crda-3.18/pubkeys. I also copied sforshee.key.pub.pem from wireless-regdb-2017.03.07 as it was newer: cp root.key.pub.pem ../crda-3.18/pubkeys/ cp sforshee.key.pub.pem ../crda-3.18/pubkeys/ I found that there are two other pubkeys located at /lib/crda : -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 451 Jan 18 12:58 benh@debian.org.key.pub.pem -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 451 Jan 18 12:58 linville.key.pub.pem -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 451 Jan 18 12:58 sforshee.key.pub.pem So I copied them too (wasn't too sure whether I needed to copy them): cp /lib/crda/pubkeys/benh\@debian.org.key.pub.pem ../crda-3.18/pubkeys/ cp /lib/crda/pubkeys/linville.key.pub.pem ../crda-3.18/pubkeys/ 10. Navigate into crda-3.18 and open the Makefile cd ../crda-3.18 nano Makefile In Kali Linux, crda is located at /lib/crda instead of /usr/bin/crda, so in the file change the 3rd line REG_BIN?=/usr/lib/crda/regulatory.bin to REG_BIN?=/lib/crda/regulatory.bin : REG_BIN?=/lib/crda/regulatory.bin 11. In the Makefile, find the line CFLAGS += -std=gnu99 -Wall -Werror -pedantic and remove the -Werror option (I couldn't compile without changing it as it treats warnings as errors): CFLAGS += -std=gnu99 -Wall -pedantic 12. Compile make clean make make install That's it! I rebooted my Raspberry Pi after compiling. reboot 13. Now let's change the region and set the txpower to 33dBm: ifconfig wlan1 down iw reg set BO iwconfig wlan1 txpower 33 ifconfig wlan1 up
  6. I am having some trouble with the Alfa AWUS036NH. When connected to a raspberry pi 3 with kali 2017.1 it will not capture handshakes as well as not showing associated clients. The adapter can find APs but that is all. airmon-ng is showing the adapter running driver rt2800usb. I have tried "airmon-ng check kill" prior to monitor mode with no luck. Also have tried "apt-get install firmware-misc-nonfree" which is supposed to help with rt2800usb issues on a rt3070 chip. I have tried using the adapter on a full install kali x64 2017.1 machine install and all appears to be working plug and play. I have searched the raspberry pi, kali, and aircrack forums but have yet to find anything with a working solution. (most threads were dead before solution was posted) Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated!
  7. Hi all, I was playing with hoover.pl last night, which works great, apart from when it gets to line 108; (system("$iwconfigPath $interface mode monitor")) && die "Cannot set interface $interface in monitoring mode!\n"; It returns the above die error, with the reason given being; Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) : SET failed on device wlan1 ; Device or resource busy. I am using a RPi3 with an Alfa Wi-Fi card connected to one USB port. The internal Wi-Fi chip is wlan0 and the external Alfa card is wlan1. I have the internal chip wlan0 connected to my home Wi-Fi, as intended, so that I can SSH to the RPi. However, I believe the issue above is stemming from the fact that, when I run iwconfig, both wlan0 and wlan1 are showing as being connected to my home Wi-Fi. I don't want this; I would like wlan0 to connect to my home Wi-Fi, but wlan1 to stay available to use in monitor mode. I have tried; iwconfig wlan1 down iwconfig wlan1 mode monitor (and/or) airmon-ng start wlan1 iwconfig wlan1 up No luck; wlan1 still insists on reconnecting to my home Wi-Fi and setting itself back to Managed mode. How can I stop wlan1 (Alfa card) connecting to my home Wi-Fi, but leave wlan0 (RPi3 internal) connected to it? Thank you.
  8. Bought an alfa awus036nh and loaded up ubuntu 16.04 lts on a thinkpad 420. BUT the thinkpad wireless gets me a better signal than the alfa??? I noted the power readings from fluxion using both wireless adapters in the same location. ALSO I can't seem to up the TX on the alfa at all. is there a problem with Ubuntu drivers and this usb wireless adapter? I thought it was supposed to be pretty well respected for hacking? I found a few discussions on this topic that lead me to believe that the current standard drivers in ubuntu 16.04 weren't the correct ones BUT they all seem to disagree on which to install. thanks for any pointers.
  9. I'm using probeSniffer to log probe requests. I'm on Kali 2.0 using an Alfa AWUSO36NH wireless adapter in monitor mode. Everything works, but about an hour in, the process is "Killed." And it stops logging probe requests. My goal is to run this for several days, non-stop. Is the adapter going into a power management induced sleep? And how would I achieve fixing that so I can collect my data? https://github.com/xdavidhu/probeSniffer Cheers
  10. i have a 50 dollar and want to spend it on a good receiver i know that i should prefere atheros chipset but the nha don't have good support on windows 10
  11. I just recently bought the ALFA AWUS036NEH from the hak5 shop. And i am having trouble making it work with programs like airodump-ng, wash and reaver. It starts the monitor mode on wlan0mon but when i run airodump -ng for example it comes up with nothing even tough i know there are alot of APs close by. (I did the whole airmon -ng check and kill processes beforehand so no issue there) Il have to admit i bought this card without much knowledge about the card, i just assumed since they sold it at the hak5 shop it would be able to do packet injection and monitor mode etc. Is this not the case, did i just waste 20 dollars on a "normal" wireless card? Or do i have some other issue that causes my wireless card to not work? If there is any additional information i can provide just let me know, im sort of a linux noob so im not sure what info to give in a case like this. Any help what so ever is greatly appriciated i really dont wanna bin this card but at this point that is were it is heading.
  12. What are the most possible things i can do with my Alfa AWUS036H? Other than wifi password hacking and flooding mode?
  13. Hi all, I'm using an Alfa AWUS036h with a 7dbi directional. I would have thought, through general reading-up, I would have gotten around 100-200 meters worth of distance with these. However, it's only picking up access points up to around 70m away, and I tried connecting to my WiFi from only 42m away and it fails to connect, even though it sees the access point. The line-of-sight is only broken by one exterior wall. TX power is currently out-of-the-box at 24 dBm. Most of the access points have worse-than-I-would-have-hoped-for signal strength, with most being worse than -60 PWR, even for access points that are less than 30m away! Any thoughts on how to improve this / why this happening? Thanks.
  14. I Picked up an unused alfa 800mhz pen booster for something stupid like $4, but it didn't come with anything. Can any one give me the specs of the barrel DC to USB cord or a link to one? I'd hate to order one and end up being another cord to go in the junk cord milk crate.
  15. Hello, is there a way to convert AP121U with Pineapple firmware back to original Alfa firmware? Thanks.
  16. I love this little thing, I've had it for less than a week and I've learned a lot already. Sadly, my WLAN0 has gone missing from my WIFI Client dropdown menu under Networking. I can see that it exsists under the Advanced Menu, I can also change it's MAC address. I was using an AWUS036H, a tiny Edimax Dongle and/or the tiny dongle sold by Hakshop testing out range for about an hour. I turned it off via the GUI, came back to it a few hours later and I was wlan0-less. I wish I knew more about the UNIX commands but I don't at the moment. Somewhere in one of the logs, I believe I saw something that seemed the firmware for one of the dongles had replaced the wlan0 firmware. I'm not sure but I sure do miss it. I get paranoid when powerful little tools act funky. Could you glance over these logs and tell me if something nefarious is going on? I've reset it hard and soft, flashed the firmware and updated it all in different order several times. The logs change slightly from here to there but I can't tell what it all means exactly. Here are the logs from this morning (5am is) DMESG AFTER REFLASHING FIRMWARE: [ 0.000000] Linux version 3.18.23 (sebkinne@Worker) (gcc version 4.8.3 (OpenWrt/Linaro GCC 4.8-2014.04 r46591) ) #13 Thu Jan 21 13:34:28 PST 2016 [ 0.000000] MyLoader: sysp=8a14b024, boardp=44b65156, parts=b69f8d32 [ 0.000000] bootconsole [early0] enabled [ 0.000000] CPU0 revision is: 00019374 (MIPS 24Kc) [ 0.000000] SoC: Atheros AR9330 rev 1 [ 0.000000] Determined physical RAM map: [ 0.000000] memory: 04000000 @ 00000000 (usable) [ 0.000000] Initrd not found or empty - disabling initrd [ 0.000000] Zone ranges: [ 0.000000] Normal [mem 0x00000000-0x03ffffff] [ 0.000000] Movable zone start for each node [ 0.000000] Early memory node ranges [ 0.000000] node 0: [mem 0x00000000-0x03ffffff] [ 0.000000] Initmem setup node 0 [mem 0x00000000-0x03ffffff] [ 0.000000] On node 0 totalpages: 16384 [ 0.000000] free_area_init_node: node 0, pgdat 80355cf0, node_mem_map 81000000 [ 0.000000] Normal zone: 128 pages used for memmap [ 0.000000] Normal zone: 0 pages reserved [ 0.000000] Normal zone: 16384 pages, LIFO batch:3 [ 0.000000] Primary instruction cache 64kB, VIPT, 4-way, linesize 32 bytes. 18. Hello everyone, I apologize if I have missed a thread where this has been covered and appreciate your help and time ^^ I have this card and I could set the tx power on windows 7 and after installing windows 8.1 pro I cannot find this option anymore, help ? I think there is an option to set the tx power even higher, anyone know? Problem I have is when I use windows 7 in VMWare, for some reason there isn't any tx power option, maybe only when it's installed as host? Also I have other questions regarding finding wpa key, can I post it here?
  19. I could just be forgetting a step, but I haven't found an answer through any other questions I received my alfa AWUS036NEH from Hakshop about a week ago. I installed Kali in a VirtualBox virtual machine and have tried using the Alfa on a few test networks. (A Linksys, an Arris, and Netgear routers) I connect the Alfa to the virtual machine and it appears in lsusb and I can see it with Airmon-ng as wlan0. Starting airmon-ng on wlan0 returns monitor mode on mon0. Airmon-ng does list three running processes as possible issues. I have stopped one at a time and then all three without any difference in the problem. I start airodump on mon0 and airodump starts cycling through channels. A minute later I receive one Base Station result with no SSID. Airodump started collecting frames, but then I realized the MAC address the Alfa's Mac address. I also tried Wireshark on that mon0. It only collected information originating from the Alfa that should be on mon0. Neither showed any evidence of the multiple networks in the same room. If pictures would be helpful, I can post those. If any specifics about the setup are needed, just tell me. I'm not sure what is needed to help.
  20. Hi, I got the ALFA AWUS036NHA a week ago and I keep running into the problem that the usb keeps deinitializing. Sometimes it stays up but for most of the time I have to keep plugging it in or out just to see if it will work. I have some DMESG here: [ 754.395088] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 34 using xhci_hcd [ 759.598644] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0cf3, idProduct=9271 [ 759.598653] usb 1-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=16, Product=32, SerialNumber=48 [ 759.598658] usb 1-3: Product: UB91C [ 759.598661] usb 1-3: Manufacturer: ATHEROS [ 759.598665] usb 1-3: SerialNumber: 12345 [ 759.599272] usb 1-3: ath9k_htc: Firmware htc_9271.fw requested [ 759.599653] usb 1-3: firmware: direct-loading firmware htc_9271.fw [ 759.881726] usb 1-3: ath9k_htc: Transferred FW: htc_9271.fw, size: 51272 [ 760.119294] ath9k_htc 1-3:1.0: ath9k_htc: HTC initialized with 33 credits [ 760.386903] ath9k_htc 1-3:1.0: ath9k_htc: FW Version: 1.3 [ 760.386911] ath: EEPROM regdomain: 0x833a [ 760.386913] ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a country code [ 760.386917] ath: doing EEPROM country->regdmn map search [ 760.386920] ath: country maps to regdmn code: 0x37 [ 760.386923] ath: Country alpha2 being used: GB [ 760.386925] ath: Regpair used: 0x37 [ 760.391745] ieee80211 phy22: Atheros AR9271 Rev:1 [ 760.391920] cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: GB [ 760.401584] cfg80211: Current regulatory domain intersected: [ 760.401594] cfg80211: DFS Master region: unset [ 760.401598] cfg80211: (start_freq - end_freq @ bandwidth), (max_antenna_gain, max_eirp) [ 760.401604] cfg80211: (2402000 KHz - 2472000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm) [ 760.401609] cfg80211: (5170000 KHz - 5250000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 1700 mBm) [ 760.401614] cfg80211: (5250000 KHz - 5330000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm) [ 760.401619] cfg80211: (5490000 KHz - 5710000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 2400 mBm) [ 760.709534] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan1: link is not ready [ 761.054991] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, device number 34 [ 761.366396] usb 1-3: ath9k_htc: USB layer deinitialized [ 761.603495] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 35 using xhci_hcd [ 776.724824] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110 [ 776.828820] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: Setup ERROR: setup context command for slot 5.   21. I recently received a Yagi antenna that I had purchased from the Hak Shop. Now I'm trying to figure out what I need to connect it to my alfa awus036h. I've attached a couple photos showing the yagi and alfa connectors. From the information I could gather from wikipedia, these have SMA Male (Yagi) and RP-SMA Female (Alfa). So to link these together I'd need a SMA Female to RP-SMA Male, correct? Is it common for the AWUS036H to have a RP-SMA Female connector? Just curious, since the connector between the alfa and yagi seems uncommon. Thanks.
  22. Hello everyone, I've been looking for the past couple of hours for the best wireless dongle to buy, which I found out that is the : alfa awus036nha. But then a second before purchasing I was thinking to myself, could be that it's not compatible with my mac ?. So the question is, is it compatible with my Mac OS 10.9.4 version ? From a first look it seems that it won't be compatible and that the one that is recommended to buy is awus036nh. What would you suggest me to get ?
  23. Hi guys, Today I finaly got my Alfa AWUS036NHA, but I have a problem with it. When I connect it to any computer or any OS the LED starts blinking and it keeps connecting and disconnecting from the host computer. I tried using other USB cables, so this won't be the problem. Any kind of help will be nice. Vinnii
  24. I have searched through the forums and cannot find the answer, so I'm hoping that someone can help me solve this problem (or tell me it is how the system work) The pieces I am using: Pineapple - (Wlan0) in Access Point Mode Alfa awus036neh - (Wlan2) To connect in client mode to my home WiFi network iPad air - Connect to Pineapple AP to get to management GUI The Issue: I have been connecting without problems to the Pineapple management page through my iPad air. I cannot see the pineapple when I am connected to my home WiFi network. When I connect to the pineapple via the pineapples AP, I am able to access the GUI. I try to add the MAC address of the iPad to the Karma blacklist (in order to not spoof my iPad) but after I add it , I cannot access the GUI any longer. When using Karma it seems like (Wlan1) is down, so I can't use that. Is there a way to maintain control of the pineapple over WiFi while Karma is running (without hardwired tether)? Thanks for any help!
  25. Hi everyone, At the risk of sounding really stupid, Ive bought an ALFA USB WiFi AWUS036NEH to use with my MK5 Wifi Pineapple, so that i can use the MK5 as a access point while connected to the internet using wifi and finally use the remaining antenna with PineAP, karma and harvester. However, I've connected the alfa using the usb and i expected to see wlan0, wlan1 and now wlan2, but i don't see any change. What do i need to do to get this to work, any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance
