Madman's Home Network
This is a network I have installed in a home built in 1930. The server, modem, router, switch, and patch panel are all mounted on a homemade rack in the basement. Cat5e runs through the walls and terminates at wall plates in a number of rooms. The server has a couple drives in it that hold media and share it all via Samba. The media is then accessible via mapped network drives on the pc's and can be streamed to XBMC. The server also runs Misterhouse, an open-source home automation program. Various Insteon devices around the house, such as light switches and outlets, are controlled by MisterHouse. Some details of my setup are shown here.
Future plans include setting up a second server that will allow me to separate Misterhouse from the media server. That will allow me to add some additional features to Misterhouse, such as voip and more integrated security. I'm also looking for a handheld device, preferably a cellular/wifi combo, that will allow me to control the automation system from within the house or abroad. Eventually I also plan to get away from using XBMC on old xbox's and build dedicated HTPC's to run it instead.
