Hi,

I hope it's Ok to put a suggestion in here...

I was wondering if an Episode about Cell phone tapping wouldn't be a good Idea?

I've done a lot of research and found a lot of stupid software and
dubious site's till I saw this video http://www.youtube.c...u/1/o6aKuDSg_CQ
This guy shows how he got to work using
OpenBTS: http://openbts.sourceforge.net/
Asterisk: http://www.asterisk.org/
and a USRP: http://www.ettus.com/

It isn't a cheap project, but verry interesting.

I thought I would give you all an idea that i had,
let me know what you think about it.

Ignoring the fact that it's rightfully illegal and can land you in jail :
Don't you think it's immoral to listen in on other peoples phone-calls ?

In my opinion it isn't less immoral than stealing people's password's with a USB hack or
use a Rubber Ducky to implement a backdoor or whatever other hack you wan't.

Ok it is way more direct, as you instantly get people's conversation...

The cell phone tapping is maybe illegal, but there are a lot more things you can do with
OpenBTS , Asterisk and a USRP, like building your own cell phone network...

I bet you could do a lot of other really cool things with a USRP like a pirate radio station. I wish I had the money to buy one.

So, wrong times wrong equals right or what exactly are you saying ?
Cellphone tapping isn't "maybe illegal", it IS illegal and you go to jail if caught .
For what, proving a point or something ?

Also, I don't think I ever said anything about it being OK to actually go and steal passwords
or backdoor peoples computers ?
IMO, it's perfectly OK to do these things as a proof-of-concept,
but to actually do it to other peoples phones/computers isn't.

It is possible to use kismet and a dect card to pickup cordless phone calls. But the card is rare and expensive...

I have heard this discussed before. Some people say it is not a wiretap because it is a radio signal that is being received freely through the air. Like picking up a radio station. Either way the government doesn't seem to think there are any laws regarding wiretap. Just watch the video below.

There really isn't a way you can just throw a device in monitor mode and be able to grab cell phone data out of the air. It channel hops and all sorts of crazy stuff. The only way would be to have devices connect to your mini-cell site and you MITM and so on.

Technically sniffing non-encrypted, open AP's data is legal, but if you crack say WEP or WPA encryptions, then it's wire-tapping. Don't remember the articles or I would post the link that they mentioned it.

**Note: I'm no lawyer, I could be wrong, things could change, etc. etc.

I have heard the term "Device Cloning" in the past, doesn't this produce the same result. Essentially, spoofing the orinating phone and recieving all incomming and outgoing comm. Think that would supplement the android hacking segments nicely. Now thats a HaCK that I couldreally appreaciate.

Wouldn't the hackrf board be capable of listening to these freq? and also mayby be able to run a interface to the other programs required for this?

something like rfcat could be interesting for this. I remember Darren showing something similar for RF hacks using the ToorCon badge.
