Noobs Guide To Pandora's Rip Hack

So your lost like I was? Don't know where to start? Well here is my complete NOOB GUIDE to Pandora's Music Rip Hack.

First of all Before you do anything.
1. Make sure you are using latest Java.
2. Have FireFox
3. Windows Xp

Download the latest version of Pandora: Pandora Beta 7.4.0

Now when you download, "Save it to Desktop" just so we don't get confused.

Now make a new folder on your desktop name it "Pandora"
Put the file in that folder and extract it in there. Now go back to your desktop and right click Pandora Folder and click "cut"

Right Click Start. Go to Explorer then Local Disk (C: ) or just C:

Now to the right you will see a list of folders and junk just ignore it. Right click in a white area and press "Paste" You will notice your folder is there.

Now minimize that and go to Start/Run and type cmd then press ok.

A black screen should show up (this is your Dos).
Type in "cd c:pandora" (Without Quotes)

Now type "java -jar pandora.jar 8085" (Without Quotes)

A blue screen should show up saying something about "Now were ready to rip Mp3's" something like that.

Now Minimize that and everything else. Open up Firefox and type this exactly: "http://localhost:8085" (Without Quotes)

When done correctly it will take you to Pandoras website along with Pandora hack mixed in.

Now just do normal Searching of your music and it will take 10 - 20 seconds depending on your Net Connection. All Music will be saved in your Pandora folder you made.

*Important*
When your listening to a song and you don't like it and switch to another song make sure that it doesn't say something like "fetching ID3 information and tagging MP3 for artist *** song ***...." Or else everything will crash and you will need to redo everything again. So just wait untill it says "MP3 tagged and saved:
C:PandoraDocuments and Settings***DesktopMusicmp3******.mp3"

Thats all I can think of for this tutorial if I missed anything PLEASE PM ME I will get it fixed ASAP.

Credit goes to another member of these forums "irieb" without him I couldn't have made this Tutorial. Thanks Irieb!

Just a Compilation for newbies...:
REQUIREMENTS
  • Latest version of Java RE (or optionally JDK)
  • Firefox Browser
  • Latest version of Apache Ant (optional)
  • Flash 8 (Flash 9 WILL NOT work)

SOURCES
Beta 7.3.1 is here (with sources and ANT script)
http://wildandbad.com/pandora.beta.7.3.1.zip (includes src files)
Note: This version includes the 'MrDave' skin AND BOTH the l0ki76117 skins (HAK5 and Milky).

DOWNLOADS
The latest stable version (BETA version 7.3.1) can be found here:
http://wildandbad.com/pandora.beta.7.3.1.zip
MIRROR: http://latenightgames.com/pandora/pandora.beta.7.3.zip

Skins Pack 1: (includes Neon Red, Neon Green and Neon Violet)
http://wildandbad.com/skinspak1.zip

INSTALLATION
Unzip everything to the same directory ("C:Pandora" for example) and then run the pandora.bat file. You may need to edit the pandora.bat file to point to your browser location (if it is non-standard)

You can specify a port (80 is the default) if 80 is being used by launching pandora.bat with a single parameter (i.e., pandora.bat 8888) to specify the port desired.

This is known to work on Mas OS X using the pandora.sh script. You must set the permissions of the file to make it executable and the iTunes stuff does not work on Macs.

To install a Skin Pack just unzip the file into an existing Pandora installation. NOTE: Skin Packs may replace files in your default Pandora Installation so be sure to install them AFTER you install a default Pandora.

Configuration
QUOTE ("barley!!!")
I discovered a problem with the ITunes integration, it appears as in some systems you must have a copy of the jacob.dll in your system32 directory or a java runtime exception is sometimes thrown.

To resolve this problem:
1) copy the jacob.dll file from the ../pandora/install/bin/ directory
2) paste the file into your systems C:WINDOWSsystem32 directory.
3) restart pandoras jar
4) the ITunes option should work now :D

There is also a file called default.properties in the pandora folder. You MUST edit this file to change the default save location for your mp3 files. Here is a sample configuration:
CODE
#uncomment the following line to set your preferred storage dir - u can change at at runtime if u want

mp3.archive.path=C:/Pandora/

tmp.mp3.retry.count=20

If you have Flash 9 and want to uninstall it and install Flash 8:
You can download Flash Player 8 HERE

But first you have to unistall Flash Player 9 by downloading THIS

Changes: (beta 7.3):
* Fixed URL to mini player
* Fixed positioning of Mini Player
* Added style switcher
* Added "Backstage" button
* Bundled l0ki76117 skins with distro.
* cleaned out some redundant files
* added 'favorites' icon
* added pandorasJar verion (in Constants.java)

Thanks for the great instrutions.

You can make the execution of this as simple as one click. If you have followed the directions above and have done a standard installation of Firefox, the following should work perfectly.

First create a batch file.

1) From Windows open Notepad (or another text editor) and type the following
cd c:pandora
start java -jar pandora.jar 8085
cd c:Program FilesMozilla Firefox
start firefox http://localhost:8085

2) Save the file as something like pandora.bat. I saved in my c:pandora subdirectory, but you can save it anywhere.

3) You can execute the file by double clicking on it from Windows. You can create a copy on your desktop or on your start menu for easy access

You can download a zip of it here if you want
http://www.box.net/public/7ku2yj4c2r
((You really should be very careful about downloading executables or batch files. This one is safe.))

Just such a batch file is included with the latest version of Pandora.

The latest PandoraGrabber skin file has a feature that allows you to hide the Track Info and Settings panels.

Use the "Track Info" and "Settings" buttons in the upper right corner to hide and show the panels as desired.

Use the two check boxes ("Hide info" and "Hide Settings") to set the behavior you want by default. If the box is checked, the panel will be hidden.

FYI.. If anyone wants to run this on os x here is a script that I put together to start everything for you.

This should be added to the next verion of this app, so check the main directory and see if there is a pandora.sh file first.

CODE
export TEMP=`echo ~`/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems

java -jar pandora.jar 8085&

cd /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/

./firefox-bin http://localhost:8085&

I just create a file called pandora.sh in the same directory as the pandora.jar file and add the above that to it. Make sure it is executable and run ./pandora.sh. May be a better way to do it, but this works for me. Also this only works if Firefox is not running yet. I am not sure how to open a new window in firefox via command line. Any ideas? This should be added to the next verion of this app, so check the main directory and see if there is a pandora.sh file first.

What is the difference between Pandora's Jar and Pandora Ripper? Is one better than another? Are there even more than those 2?

There is no difference. Pandora Ripper is the older name. The "project name", as it were, is Pandora's Jar.

Personally, I prefer to avoid the name 'ripper' becasue it has connotations of stealing and illegal distribution. This application is not intended for stealing or getting 'free' mp3s. It is intended for 'timeshifting' the Pandora player so that you can listen to it on your own time or devices.

It is expected that you will "play fair" and delete the files once you've listened to them. Or, better yet, not timeshift at all and just use this as a personal edition of the last.fm/pandora mashup.

But that is just my personal feeling...the guy who could get sued for distributing a ripping application. How you use Pandora's Jar is up to you.

To the best of my knowledge thaere are no other applications that do this, although I have seen plenty of instructions online how to 'manually' accomplish the same thing.

You have to enter your email into the "Pandora userName" field, so it can retrive your specific station settings. This is how it knows what stream to listen to.

Hi,
I got a 404 Document Not Found Error when trying to connect to the Pandora Hack Server. I googled and found some people on Digg had the same problem. What was causing it to not work is an absolute path in a batch file i.e:
I had
"C:/pandora/pandora.jar"
in the batch file and tried to run it from my desktop.

Everything would start up, but then I would get the 404 upon trying to connect in FF. I changed it to just
pandora.jar
and moved it to c:/pandora, and everything works. I just thought I should post this so people can get it working and hopefully the bug can be fixed in a future release.

Well I've been getting a lot of emails from you guys on this app. Really this is all I do I don't think it can get any harder than this.

Have latest Pandora app Just look for MrDave2176's post. It seems hes keeping the updates up I would too but I am VERY busy now with work and all.

Anyways make sure you have Service Pack 2 Windows Xp "this is just what I have."

Latest Java you can get at the Java website...

And latest FireFox...

Anyways I create a new folder on my desktop and name it "Pandora" than extract the whole Pandora app in that folder. I don't touch any of the Property files or anything at all. I just Go straight to clicking the Pandora batch file and set cruise control on and that's it... I don't know what some of you guys are doing but this app isn't very hard.

And last but not least HOW COME I'M NOT ON THE WILD AND BAD WEBSITE PROPS SECTION!!! JEEEEZ!!!11!!1 :P

I've updated the first post in this thread with a download link to what should be the very latest version of Pandora's Jar. All subsequent posts in this topic may or may not be relevant to this version. For the time being you'll have to work that out for yourself (and you won't win or lose anything because of it, since the old download links in that first post didn't work anyways).

Once I've gotten my hands dirty on this app I'll clean up this thread and probably place some of that info on the Wiki aswell.

In the mean time, as always, pleace leave this thread alone. If you have any problems with the application, open a new topic or post to one of the other topics in this section of the forum.

Thank you.

The path for MP3s is incorrect, it should be:
C:Pandoramp3******.mp3 NOT
C:PandoraDocuments and Settings***DesktopMusicmp3******.mp3"

Other than that, the post helped me (for the most part)... see my thread on my broken setup :(

Unfortunately, this batch only works with an English Windows system, since it relies on the folder name "C:Program files". It would be better, if you'd replace it by "%programfiles%".

Nevertheless, thx for this great ripper!

A note on this: you *can* use blanks in path names, but you have to escape them like this: " ". So a path like "/Documents and Settings" would become "/Documents and Settings".

Pardon my euphoria but I am no programmer.

Anyway - by reading this forum and other comments on other boards tons of people were having the same problem - which someone correctly pointed out was a flash issue. BUT - here is how I fixed it.

The Adobe app to remove the current (v9) version of Flash did not work for me - at home it didn't remove v9 and at work it froze 38% of the way through every time I ran it. However, I found a cool extension for Firefox called Flash Switcher that allows me to switch between versions of flash, thus I know I am running v8 and VOILA I am now ripping away.
